FDA handles most foods; the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), through its Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), handles meat, poultry, and processed egg products. To check a recall, identify the food category, find the notice from the right agency or FoodSafety.gov, and compare your package with the notice’s exact product details and codes.
Which agency handles each type of food?
The food category—not the reason for the recall—determines which agency generally handles it. FDA states that it regulates all foods except meat, poultry, and processed egg products, which are regulated by USDA. That division applies whether a recall involves a contamination concern, a foreign object, or an undeclared allergen.

For a combined consumer route, FoodSafety.gov’s recalls and outbreaks page provides information from both agencies. FDA also says its food-recalls widget compiles FDA and USDA information.

Many recalls are voluntary actions started by a manufacturer or distributor. FDA oversees recalls of FDA-regulated foods and may request or mandate a recall in some situations; that does not mean every recall is ordered by the agency. FDA’s mandatory recall authority under section 423 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act applies to qualifying foods and circumstances, not every food or hazard. The notice for the specific product is the guide to what action is being taken.

Recall outcomes and instructions can differ. FDA notes that an item may sometimes be corrected and returned to the marketplace, so do not assume every notice calls for the same disposal, return, or refund steps.
How to check whether your food is included
- Find the notice. Start with FoodSafety.gov for a combined view, or check the FDA or FSIS recall page based on the food category. FDA-regulated recall information is also available through its Enforcement Report and recall email updates.
- Compare the package details. Match the brand and product name, package size and type, UPC, lot or date codes, and any photos in the notice. Check sell-by or use-by dates and any listed stores, locations, or distribution area. A matching brand by itself does not show that every package is affected.
- Follow that notice’s instructions. Check whether it says to return the product, dispose of it, or take another specified step. Do not rely on instructions from a different product’s recall notice.
What to do with a recalled product
- Do not eat it or give it to another person, a food bank, or a pet.
- If the notice says to dispose of it, wrap it securely before putting it in the trash. If a return is applicable, follow the notice’s directions; FDA says recalled food can often be returned for a refund.
- Wash and sanitize surfaces, utensils, and storage areas that may have touched the food, then wash your hands after cleanup.
- If you think an FDA-regulated product made you sick, contact a healthcare provider. You can also report the problem to FDA.
