For a current starting point, try 4-2-1-3 with Balanced build-up and a Balanced Defensive Approach. It was the most-used formation in FUT.GG’s tracked-squad snapshot dated October 1, 2026—not proof that it wins most often or suits every team. If you want more defensive cover, compare 4-4-1-1; if your strongest players are central, consider 4-3-1-2 or 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow.
Which FC 27 formation should you start with?
There is no universally best shape: your players, their roles, and how you prefer to attack and defend all matter. A formation popular in competitive squads can still feel too narrow or awkward for your personnel. The recommendations below address FC 27 tactics generally; how well they fit can also depend on the mode you play.
In its October 1, 2026 snapshot, FUT.GG listed 4-2-1-3 first for both tracked community and pro squads. The figures describe the tracker’s populations, not every FC 27 player, and they measure usage—not wins.

How to set up 4-2-1-3
The October 2026 tactics guide recommends these settings as a current starting setup:
- Build-up: Balanced
- Defensive Approach: Balanced
- Line Height: 60
- CDMs: Deep-Lying Playmakers
- CAM: Playmaker
- Wingers: Inside Forwards on both sides
- Striker: Advanced Forward
The guide describes Line Height 60 as the top of the Balanced range, which it gives as 31–60. It also reports 60 as a common setting for its leading formations. Treat that as a usage observation and a starting point, not a required value: adjust it if the resulting defensive space or pressure does not suit your play.

When to choose another shape
Choose 4-4-1-1 for a steadier defensive shape
If opponents are repeatedly breaking through after you lose possession, try 4-4-1-1. The recent guide describes it as a safer option for players conceding on counters, and it ranked second among tracked community squads in the cited snapshot. It is a comparison to test with your squad, not a guarantee that counterattacks will stop.

Try 4-3-1-2 or 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow if your best passing options and attackers are through the middle rather than on the wings. Their usage was higher among tracked pro squads than community squads in the October 2026 snapshot, but that does not establish that either shape is stronger for your team. Narrow systems also ask you to build attacks through central spaces rather than relying on natural width from the formation.

Match tactics to your squad and defending style
Compare formations by asking what your players can do and what you want the team to do—not by popularity alone:
- Width or central combinations: A wide front three and a narrow pair of forwards create different passing routes. Pick the one your squad can support.
- One striker or two: Consider whether you want a lone forward supported by a CAM or two forwards combining centrally.
- Defensive cover: If you are exposed when possession turns over, try the more conservative 4-4-1-1 before raising pressure or changing several settings at once.
- Player roles: The current guide says role familiarity affects how urgently players make runs. A role that looks good on a tactics screen may be less useful if your player is unfamiliar with it.
- Manual defending: The guide says AI-controlled defenders have less influence than before in competitive gameplay. A T3 reviewer likewise described manual defending as more consequential, but that is one reviewer’s experience, not controlled testing. Set your defensive approach around how you defend and the mode you play.
Does the best tactic depend on the game mode?
Yes. EA’s official FC 27 mode guide describes different play contexts: Manager Career includes custom tactics, Ultimate Team is for building a squad and competing or playing against AI, and Kick Off is a quick-match option. A setup that fits a carefully built Ultimate Team squad may not translate directly to another mode or a different group of players.

Use the formation and settings as a starting point, then judge them in the mode where you actually play. In particular, do not assume that a defensive approach that feels manageable against AI opponents will feel the same in competitive play.
