Fauna’s hosted database service was scheduled to end on May 30, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. Pacific time. That deadline has passed. Fauna told customers to move their applications and data to another database by then and announced that accounts and associated data would be permanently deleted after the service ended. The deletion statement was Fauna’s announced policy; whether it was carried out for any particular account has not been independently verified here.

When did FaunaDB shut down?

Fauna’s Service End of Life FAQ gave Friday, May 30, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. Pacific time as the end of service. The date and time are Fauna’s announced deadline, not a future shutdown date.

What did Fauna say would happen to customer accounts and data?

Fauna said accounts and associated data would be permanently deleted after the service ended. This describes the company’s stated policy; it does not establish the later outcome for an individual account. Customers who need to know what happened to a specific account should contact Fauna through any support channel still available to them.

Fauna also said all customers needed to move their applications and data to a new database by the deadline. Its FAQ pointed to a migration guide and described transition support: paid-plan customers could seek support, while Free and Pay as You Go customers were directed to community help. Fauna said new accounts were no longer available and trial customers could not upgrade.

Why did Fauna announce the service’s end?

In its March 19, 2025 announcement, The Future of Fauna, the company explained that it could not secure the funding it believed was needed to continue independently. Fauna wrote: “In the current market environment, our board and investors have determined that it is not possible to raise the capital needed to achieve that goal independently.” This is Fauna’s explanation for its decision.

Alongside the shutdown announcement, Fauna committed to release its core database technology as open source, together with existing drivers and CLI tooling. That commitment alone does not establish whether the technology is now available, maintained, or suitable for production.

How should you choose a replacement database?

Fauna’s instruction was to move to a new database, but its announcement does not identify one successor that suits every application. Evaluate options against the system your application actually needs to run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Data model and queries: Map Fauna’s data structures and query patterns to the candidate system. Identify application code that will need to change.
  • Transactions and consistency: Determine which operations must be atomic and what consistency behavior your application depends on.
  • Hosting geography: Check where the service can store and process data, including any requirements that apply to your users or organization.
  • Migration tooling: Confirm that you can export the data you need, import it into the candidate, and validate the result. Plan for application changes as well as data transfer.
  • Support and status: Verify that the database and its migration tools are currently supported. Do not assume Fauna’s open-source commitment means a maintained, production-ready successor exists.

A migration plan should include a data inventory, a mapping from existing structures and queries to the new system, a test import, application validation, and a clear cutover plan. The appropriate replacement depends on those requirements; Fauna’s announcement does not establish that any particular provider is the right choice.
