The game behind the “PS1-era graphics meets Backrooms” description is Fatum Betula, an atmospheric exploration game by independent developer Bryce Bucher. Its deliberately rough, low-resolution look and strange, empty spaces create an uncanny mood, but it is not an official Backrooms game or adaptation.
What is Fatum Betula?
Fatum Betula is a surreal exploration game with light puzzle elements. Its central premise is unusual: explore the world, find something suitable to feed a magical birch, and affect the future. The official Steam listing describes ten unique endings; that is the storefront’s stated count, not a claim based on an independently verified playthrough.
Steam lists June 20, 2020, as the release date and names Bryce Bucher as both developer and publisher. Bucher’s itch.io page presents the game as a Windows download and provides controls.

The retro look is deliberate rather than a claim that the game runs on original PlayStation hardware. Steam says Fatum Betula uses a 320×240 resolution and calls back to older hardware’s unstable vertices and misaligned textures. Those limitations give the 3D environments a low-poly, slightly unreliable appearance instead of modern visual polish.

That roughness helps make ordinary spaces feel unfamiliar. Locations can seem surreal and disconnected, and even a recognizable domestic interior can become unsettling when it appears in an impossible context. The effect is less about detailed monsters or spectacle than about not quite trusting the spaces the game asks you to explore.
In what way is it Backrooms-style horror?
The comparison is about atmosphere: empty, uncanny spaces and the disquiet of exploring somewhere that feels wrong. It is not evidence of an official Backrooms connection, licensed setting, or adaptation. The Steam listing describes atmospheric exploration and light puzzles, not a Backrooms game.

- Adjust expectations if you want photorealistic horror or a confirmed chase-and-survival focus; those are not the experience emphasized by the official description.
- Look elsewhere if you specifically want an official Backrooms tie-in. The comparison here is tonal, not a stated franchise relationship.
