To get faster downloads, first find out whether the slowdown is coming from your Wi-Fi, router, device, or broadband service. Run several speed tests, compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi when possible, then address the weak link: reduce competing network use, improve router placement, restart equipment, or contact your internet provider if wired speeds stay low.
Why is my download speed slow?
A speed test is a snapshot, not a diagnosis. Results can change with the device you use, distance from the router, household activity, and the test server. A single low result does not establish that your provider is delivering less than your plan promises. Repeat tests at different times and compare the results.
Download speed can be limited at several points between the internet and the device receiving a file:

- Wi-Fi: Distance, walls, router placement, and other wireless activity can make a device’s connection slower than the broadband service itself.
- Router or other network equipment: Equipment may lack the capability or coverage needed for your plan and home.
- Device or download source: A device’s capabilities or the source serving a particular download may affect its speed. A speed test on another device can help establish whether the problem is limited to one device or download.
Wi-Fi cannot deliver more than the broadband connection feeding the router. Likewise, upgrading a broadband plan will not fix poor Wi-Fi coverage. Ofcom explains common speed factors and ways to investigate them in its practical tips for improving broadband speed.

- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
How to test what is slowing downloads
- Note the expected speed. Check the download speed advertised or estimated for your current plan. Record the device you are testing and, if relevant, the source of the slow download.
- Run several speed tests. Test at different times, preferably on more than one day. Close downloads and other bandwidth-heavy activity on the test device; pause other household activity where practical to make comparisons cleaner.
- Compare Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If the device supports it, connect it directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and run a test. Then test over Wi-Fi near the router. Keep the device and test method consistent where possible.
- Read the comparison. If Ethernet is substantially faster than Wi-Fi, investigate wireless coverage, placement, or competing devices. If both are slow across repeated tests, the problem may be with the broadband service, router, or another part of the connection.
Ethernet is a diagnostic aid, not a way to make your provider deliver a faster plan. For guidance on test scope and network congestion, see Google Nest Help’s internet speed testing guidance.
What to do if Wi-Fi is the weak link
Improve the router’s position
Place the router in a more open, central location if practical. Reducing distance and physical barriers between the router and the device can improve the wireless connection. If speeds improve close to the router but fall elsewhere in the home, coverage is a more likely concern than the broadband plan itself. Ofcom’s Wi-Fi guidance covers ways to improve the wireless experience.

Reduce competing activity and restart equipment
Downloads, streams, and other active devices share the home connection. Temporarily disconnect or pause devices you are not using, then retest. Restart the router and any relevant mesh or fiber equipment. A reboot can resolve some problems, but it cannot raise the connection above the capacity of your plan. The FCC says, “Sometimes a simple router reboot—by powering it off and then back on again—can resolve a problem.” The statement describes a possibility, not a guarantee; see the FCC’s Home Network Tips for the Coronavirus Pandemic.
What to do if Ethernet is also slow
If repeated wired tests remain below the speed expected for your plan, contact your internet service provider. Give it your test results and ask it to check for a service disruption or line issue, explain the speed expected under your current plan, and confirm that your equipment supports that plan. The FCC’s Broadband Made Simple guide discusses factors that can slow service and choosing a plan.

Consider a router replacement only if evidence points to the router’s capability or coverage as the limitation. Before buying, check that the router is compatible with your provider and plan and can cover the areas where you need a connection. If wired tests are consistently slow, first ask the provider to investigate; consider a different plan or provider only after confirming local availability, total costs, and contract terms.

| What the tests suggest | Next step | What the change can and cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi is slow, but Ethernet is substantially faster. | Improve router placement, reduce barriers and competing activity, and check coverage. | Addresses the home wireless connection; a faster broadband tier alone will not fix poor Wi-Fi coverage. |
| Wired and wireless tests are repeatedly slow. | Ask the provider to check service disruption, line issues, expected plan speed, and equipment compatibility. | Helps identify whether the service or equipment needs attention; a new router cannot exceed the broadband service feeding it. |
| Only one device or one download is slow. | Compare with another device or a different download source before changing network equipment or plans. | Helps determine whether the limitation is specific to the device or download rather than the whole home connection. |
