The QSAN XN4226D is a 2U, 26-bay, all-NVMe unified storage system with dual active controllers. QSAN’s September 2026 datasheet lists two configurations, 8-core and 4-core per controller, and up to 1,597 TB of internal raw capacity. In separate lab testing published in October 2025, StorageReview measured up to 21.21 GB/s sequential reads and 11.14 GB/s sequential writes—results tied to its specific setup, not throughput guarantees for other networks or workloads.
What the QSAN XN4226D is
The XN4226D combines block and file storage in a 2U chassis with 26 2.5-inch drive bays and dual active controllers. QSAN positions it for organizations that need high-throughput NVMe storage while supporting a range of host protocols, including file, block, and NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF).
The current manufacturer specification snapshot is QSAN’s September 2026 XN4 Series datasheet. QSAN notes that features, specifications, and appearance may change, so confirm the build and terms in a current quote.

| Configuration | Processors | Preinstalled memory | Memory slots and stated maximum |
|---|---|---|---|
| XN4226D-8C | Two Intel Xeon 8-core processors | 32 GB | 16 slots; up to 2,048 GB |
| XN4226D-4C | Two Intel Xeon 4-core processors | 32 GB | 16 slots; up to 2,048 GB |
The D models use 2.5-inch dual-port U.2 NVMe SSDs in the system and JBOF expansion. QSAN specifies PCIe Gen 4 U.2 NVMe for the array and 12 Gb/s SAS for SAS JBOD expansion, which uses SAS SSDs or SAS HDDs.
| Capacity measure | QSAN-listed maximum | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Internal raw capacity | Up to 1,597 TB | Manufacturer figure before RAID, formatting, and reserved space |
| Raw capacity with expansion | Up to 23,961 TB | Manufacturer figure with expansion; not usable-capacity guidance |
| Drive bays with expansion | Up to 650 | Maximum configuration, not the number of bays in the base 2U chassis |
Raw capacity is not the amount available to applications. RAID level, spare-drive policy, metadata, formatting, snapshots, and system reservations affect usable capacity. Ask for a configuration-specific usable-capacity estimate rather than sizing from the raw maximum.

Connectivity and supported protocols
PCIe Gen 4 x8 slots allow connectivity expansion. QSAN’s maximum port table lists up to 24 10 GbE ports, 16 25 GbE ports, or 8 100 GbE ports, depending on configuration. Fibre Channel options reach up to 64 Gb. The sheet also lists four SAS wide ports for SAS JBOD and connections to as many as four JBOFs over 10/25/100 GbE. These are configuration maxima, not a claim that all ports are installed in a base system.
QSAN lists CIFS, NFS, FTP, WebDAV, iSCSI, Fibre Channel Protocol, and NVMe-oF. The choice of protocol and host connectivity should follow the workload and the existing network or SAN design; advertised port maxima alone do not establish end-to-end bandwidth.

What the independent performance test measured
StorageReview’s review, published October 13, 2025, reports lab results from an XN4 system connected to a Dell PowerEdge R750 using four dual-port 25 GbE NICs and eight DAC cables. The test used two RAID6 pools and eight block volumes across the controllers. StorageReview preconditioned drives with two sequential-write fills before steady-state measurement and tested NVMe-oF over both RDMA and TCP.
| Workload and protocol | Reported result |
|---|---|
| Large sequential reads over TCP | Peak 21.21 GB/s |
| 1 MB sequential writes over RDMA | 11.14 GB/s |
| 1 MB sequential writes over TCP | 8.83 GB/s |
These are StorageReview’s results from its October 2025 lab configuration. They describe particular large sequential workloads and protocols, not expected performance for every application, block size, queue depth, network fabric, or system build. StorageReview reported RDMA ahead in most of its tested queue-depth and job-count combinations; that finding should not be generalized beyond those tests.

The review’s heading takeaway was “Unified block and file with real HA.” Treat that as the reviewer’s characterization, not as a formal availability guarantee. StorageReview identifies potential use cases such as virtual machines, VDI, database tiers, creative file services, AI inference, media backup or ingest, and surveillance analytics; those are suggested target workloads, not validation of performance for every deployment.
Compatibility and deployment checks before buying
Confirm the exact SSD model
QSAN specifies the dual-port U.2 NVMe SSD category for internal and JBOF use with the D models, but the cited datasheet does not name qualified retail drive models. Do not assume that any drive matching the interface is supported. Confirm the specific SSD model and firmware with QSAN or the seller before ordering. A category search for dual-port U.2 NVMe SSDs is not a compatibility list.
Size usable capacity and performance for the workload
- Request usable-capacity figures for the intended RAID layout, spare policy, snapshots, and reserved space—not just raw capacity.
- Specify workload characteristics, including read/write mix, block size, queue depth, concurrency, and latency goals.
- Validate end-to-end host bandwidth, switch or fabric support, and the required RDMA, TCP, or Fibre Channel configuration.
- Plan internal drives, SAS JBOD, and JBOF expansion as distinct options with the relevant media and connection requirements.
Verify the configuration and commercial terms
Confirm which host cards and ports are installed, which listed software functions are optional, and what expansion hardware is included. QSAN lists a five-year system warranty and a one-year cache-to-flash module warranty; regional support coverage and contract terms are not specified in that sheet. Ask the vendor to document those terms, regional availability, and the deployment-specific bill of materials. JetStor describes custom planning based on applications, bandwidth, performance, redundancy, and rack space on its XN4226D product page.

Physical specifications and power
The datasheet gives dimensions of 88 × 438 × 573 mm, dual 850 W 80 Plus Platinum power supplies, and listed power consumption of 812 W. It also lists CE, FCC, and BSMI certifications. Check rack clearance, electrical capacity, cooling, and certification requirements against the actual deployment location and configuration.
