FAST channels are scheduled, internet-streamed TV: you tune in and watch what is playing. Free movies and TV apps usually let you choose a title from an on-demand catalog. The two are not opposites, though: one app can offer both live channels and on-demand shows and movies.
What is a FAST channel?
FAST stands for free ad-supported streaming television. A FAST channel is a scheduled stream delivered over the internet. It works much like a conventional TV channel: join at any time and watch the program currently airing, rather than starting a particular episode or film from the beginning.
That makes FAST useful when you want to browse channels, leave something on in the background, or discover a program without deciding what to watch first.
How is that different from an on-demand app?
With on-demand viewing, you choose a movie or show from a catalog and start it when you are ready. You have more control over the specific title and when to begin. With a FAST channel, the channel schedule determines what is playing now; you can switch channels, but you generally join the running program.

These are different ways to watch, not a ranking of services. A title or channel lineup can change, and availability depends on the service and your location.
Can one free streaming app offer both?
Yes. The Roku Channel combines live channels with free movies and shows. Samsung describes Samsung TV Plus as offering both a linear channel lineup and on-demand viewing. In other words, “FAST service” and “free streaming app” are not mutually exclusive categories: an app can have a scheduled-channel section and a separate catalog you browse yourself.

Samsung reported nearly 700 channels in the U.S. and more than 3,500 globally in an April 17, 2025 announcement. Those are Samsung’s figures from that date, not a guaranteed current channel count. The same release reported 88 million monthly active users in 2024 and said engagement in Q1 2025 rose by more than 30% year over year; both are company-reported figures, not independent market measurements. Samsung’s announcement also includes promotional claims about its service that should be understood as Samsung’s own characterization.

Does “free” mean no ads or no paid options?
Usually, free streaming is funded by advertising, but ad policies differ by service. Tubi says it is free to install and watch, does not ask for credit-card information, and funds content through ad breaks. Its help center says Tubi currently has no ad-free option. Those are Tubi-specific policies, not a rule for every free app. Tubi’s help page explains its current model.

Do not assume a standard number of ad minutes across FAST channels or free catalogs; the cited provider information does not establish a universal ad load. Also check what a particular app labels as free: The Roku Channel offers Premium Subscriptions in certain markets and on certain platforms, so paid add-ons can exist alongside free content. Roku’s availability and access information describes those limitations.
Are FAST channels the same as antenna TV?
No. FAST channels arrive through an internet connection. Over-the-air television arrives through an antenna. Both can provide scheduled channels, but the delivery method is different. Roku’s UK support page distinguishes antenna-based broadcast access from movies and shows streamed over the internet. Roku’s explanation of free movies and TV covers the distinction.

Do you need a streaming device?
Not necessarily. Many free streaming services work on supported smart TVs, phones, tablets, computers, or other compatible devices. An external streaming device may help if your TV does not support the app you want, but check compatibility before buying hardware.
For example, Roku lists The Roku Channel on Roku devices, the web, and mobile, as well as compatible Samsung TVs and Amazon Fire TV devices. Roku’s current help page lists availability in the U.S., Canada, and U.K. across Roku devices, web, and mobile, and in Mexico on Roku devices only. This is a service-specific snapshot, not a guarantee of availability for other apps or countries. Check Roku’s current device and country details, and consult the app provider’s compatibility list for your own setup. Tubi also lists supported viewing options on its official site.

Which option should you choose?
- Choose a FAST channel when you want scheduled programming, channel surfing, or something to watch without picking a title.
- Choose on demand when you know which movie or show you want, or want to browse a catalog and start a specific title.
- Look for an app with both if you want the flexibility to switch between live-style channels and selected movies or episodes.
Before settling on an app, check its current catalog or channel lineup, ad policy, device compatibility, and availability where you live.
