Questionable means a player’s availability is uncertain; Doubtful means he is unlikely to play; and Out means he will not play. If a player’s status changes near kickoff, check your league’s rules and the lock time shown in your fantasy app before swapping in an eligible replacement. Lock deadlines vary by platform and league settings.
What do Questionable, Doubtful, and Out mean?
The NFL’s 2016 explanation of its injury-report categories defines Questionable as uncertain to play, Doubtful as unlikely to participate, and Out as not playing. The designations describe expected game availability; they are not guarantees that a player will be active or inactive at the last moment. The NFL also said in 2016 that it removed the former Probable category because approximately 95% of players previously listed as Probable played. Practice participation is not a final game-status decision
Practice reports and game-status designations convey different information. The NFL’s 2017 injury-report policy describes participation categories such as did not participate, limited, and full; a limited practice by itself does not mean a player is Out. Use the game-status designation and the latest availability news rather than treating a practice entry as a final inactive announcement. When do fantasy football players lock?
There is no single lock deadline that applies to every fantasy league. NFL Fantasy’s published 2024 rules say managers can change a player’s status before that player’s NFL team is scheduled to start, according to NFL.com’s clock. NFL Fantasy Official Rules 2024.

NFL.com’s beginner guide says players lock when their NFL game starts and advises setting a lineup before kickoff. Its example of making a change five minutes before kickoff is guidance in that NFL.com context, not a universal deadline for other apps or custom leagues. What should you do if a player may be inactive?
- Check the latest availability information. Close to kickoff, review current player news and official availability updates. NFL.com’s team-management guide recommends keeping up with player and injury news. NFL Fantasy 101: How to manage your team.
- Find eligible alternatives. Look at players already on your roster and any free agents you may add under your league’s acquisition rules. Confirm position eligibility in the league; a player who seems like a suitable replacement may not be selectable for that roster slot.
- Compare the options using your league’s context. Consider each player’s current health and reported role, your scoring settings, matchup, and kickoff time. Those details differ by league and week, so there is no universal replacement recommendation.
- Make the change before the applicable lock. Confirm the app’s displayed deadline and submit the swap in time. Do not assume a player can be moved after his NFL game begins, even if he is on your bench.
Can you swap a player after kickoff?
Do not count on it. NFL.com’s beginner guide describes players locking when their NFL game starts. NFL Fantasy’s 2024 rules likewise tie its change deadline to the scheduled start of the player’s team. Other platforms and custom league settings may handle deadlines differently; the available rules here do not establish current lock behavior for ESPN, Yahoo, or every other service. Who should you start if your player is inactive?
Choose among the players actually available and eligible in your league. Compare their expected roles using current reporting, then weigh your scoring rules, matchup, and whether their games have started. If a possible replacement plays earlier than the questionable starter, making that choice can also affect which later options remain available to you. There is no evidence-based universal pick without the week’s news and your roster and league details.
