A family of four was among the occupants rescued after two cars became trapped in rising floodwater beneath the York Street bridge in South Melbourne on Thursday afternoon, 1 October 2026. No injuries were reported at the scene. The incident unfolded during heavy rain, but the available rainfall figures do not establish an all-time Melbourne record.
What happened beneath York Street bridge?
In an incident account reproducing coverage attributed to SMH/The Age, emergency services arrived at about 3:20 pm after two cars became trapped beneath the bridge. Police rescued occupants from both vehicles, including a family of four; paramedics reported no injuries at the scene. The account does not identify the family or establish their later condition. Read the incident report.
How much rain was recorded?
The Bureau of Meteorology’s current October observations table for Melbourne Olympic Park station (086338) lists 48.4 mm on 2 October 2026. The same table records 0.2 mm on 1 October and 8.8 mm on 3 October, for 57.4 mm across 1–3 October. These are measurements for that station and those dates, not a citywide total or evidence of an all-time Melbourne rainfall record. BOM October observations for Melbourne Olympic Park.

The currently listed BOM daily value is 48.4 mm for 2 October. The figures refer to different reporting moments and should not be treated as interchangeable; neither establishes an all-time record. How many calls did emergency crews receive?
The incident report said Victorian SES received more than 120 calls for help on Thursday afternoon, with calls mostly in Malvern and Port Phillip. The Age follow-up later reported around 200 calls from midday Thursday to 7 am Friday, including 71 building-damage calls, 52 flooding calls and 45 reports of fallen trees. Those totals cover different time windows, so they are not competing counts for the same period.
Why can a short downpour cause dangerous flooding?
The Age follow-up attributed to senior meteorologist David Crock a report that about 20 to 25 mm fell in an hour or so around 3 pm. Intense rain over a short period can overwhelm drainage and leave low-lying roads or underpasses submerged while water is still rising. The report also mentioned a flood watch for many eastern Victorian catchments and forecast more heavy rain at the time; those were event-period statements, not current warnings.

Is it safe to drive through floodwater?
No. A Victorian SES spokesperson, quoted in the incident report, urged people not to drive in the forecast persistent rain and said never to enter floodwater. The Age follow-up attributed to an SES spokeswoman the warning that “It only takes 15 centimetres of water for a small car to float,” followed by: “Don’t put the lives of the community in danger.” These are reported safety warnings; the 15 cm quotation is reproduced by The Age follow-up rather than independently verified here against an original SES publication.
