Don’t connect your wallet to a “Vote now” rewards page until you verify it through the project’s official channels. Malwarebytes reported on October 1, 2026, that it found 70 websites impersonating crypto projects with fake votes on a future rewards-distribution date. The pages were unaffiliated with the projects they copied, and most promised active voters a 1.25x boost when rewards were paid.
How the fake rewards vote works
According to Malwarebytes threat-intelligence author Stefan Dasic, the pages copied project logos, menus, colors, and other branding. They invited visitors to vote on when a future rewards distribution should happen. But clicking “Vote now” opened a wallet connection prompt instead of a ballot. That began a path toward wallet requests that could trick visitors into authorizing access to tokens.
Malwarebytes described several variations: the Pendle imitation added fake dates and a countdown; the Keeta copy promised points; and the NetNet page warned that unclaimed tokens would be burned after 48 hours. Those are observations in Malwarebytes’ report, not statements independently confirmed by the named projects.
The report named xStocks from Kraken, Pendle, Zama, Kinetiq, Yield Basis, Firelight, Umia, Keeta, and NetNet. Malwarebytes said the pages were unaffiliated with the projects they copied. It offered recent launches, airdrops, public sales, or points and rewards programs as reasons that messages about rewards could seem plausible to community members. Examples in its report included Zama’s January public auction and February trading start, Kinetiq’s November 2025 governance-token launch and airdrop, Umia’s August 29–September 2 auction, Firelight points for early depositors, and Pendle’s September 4 launch on Robinhood Chain. These examples describe the context given in the report; they do not establish each project’s current status.

How to check whether a rewards vote is genuine
- Don’t use the link in the message or ad. Open the project’s official website using a bookmark or an address you type yourself.
- Check established official channels. Look for the vote or distribution announcement on the project’s own site or established social accounts. A missing announcement is a reason to stop and verify, not to trust the link because it looks convincing.
- Compare the domain. Check the address against the project’s official domain, paying attention to misspellings or extra words. A familiar logo, page layout, project name, or wallet chooser does not authenticate the site.
- Ask whether the wallet request fits the action. Read the full request in your wallet before signing. A vote should not require token-spending approval. Reject approvals, permits, or transfers that do not make sense for the action described.
- Walk away from pressure tactics. A promised boost, bonus, countdown, or short deadline is not proof that an offer is real. Don’t let urgency replace verification.
Malwarebytes’ report says to check claimed votes or rewards distributions through official project channels before connecting a wallet. This advice is particularly important when an offer promises an unusually attractive benefit for a simple action.
What to do if you already connected or signed
If you only connected your wallet
Disconnect the site using your wallet’s connected-app or site-connection controls. A connection by itself is not the same as a token approval, but disconnecting does not revoke any approvals you may already have granted.

If you approved or signed a request
Review token permissions using your wallet’s approval-management feature or a trusted approval checker, and revoke approvals you do not recognize or no longer need. If you are uncertain what a signature authorized, treat it as a possible permission and check it rather than assuming it was harmless. A wallet connection and a token approval are different actions; handle both where applicable.

Move remaining assets to a new wallet created with a new recovery phrase. Do not enter or share your recovery phrase or private key with a website, support agent, or person claiming to help. ESMA’s 2026 crypto-fraud factsheet warns that sharing either can let a scammer take assets.

Why a polished page or wallet prompt proves little
ESMA’s 2026 crypto-fraud factsheet notes that phishing messages can impersonate known crypto-asset providers, and that professional-looking logos, layouts, testimonials, and language can still accompany a fake offer. The CFTC’s educational factsheet on scam crypto or forex trading sites recommends checking domain age and watching for addresses that resemble known brands; it also warns that blockchain transactions are irreversible. These are general fraud precautions, not independent confirmation of Malwarebytes’ specific campaign.
Malwarebytes says it found 70 impersonation websites, but the report does not establish a victim count, total financial loss, or independently measured prevalence figure. Its reported 1.25x boost was a scammers’ promise, not a verified project benefit.
