Free file converters can be risky: a site may produce the file you asked for while also stealing information you uploaded or delivering malware. The FBI Denver Field Office warned on March 7, 2025, that criminals were increasingly using converter and downloader sites for malware, sometimes leading to ransomware. There is no authoritative infection-rate or victim-count figure in the cited reporting, so “on the rise” describes the FBI’s warning—not a measured percentage.
How fake converter scams work
A fake service can look like a normal conversion page, and the conversion may appear to succeed. The danger can come from the file you upload, a download the site offers, or instructions that trick you into running malicious code. FBI reporting says submitted files may be scraped for sensitive information; other documented campaigns try to get users to install malware.
Reported lures include converting DOC files to PDF or PDF files to DOC, combining JPG images into a PDF, and downloading MP3 or MP4 media. Malwarebytes reported on March 17, 2025, that exposed information can include Social Security numbers, birth dates, phone numbers, banking details, cryptocurrency seed phrases or wallet addresses, email addresses, and passwords.

Ads and deceptive installers
Some sites prompt visitors to download a “converter” that is actually malware. Google Trust & Safety’s May 2025 advisory also identifies malvertising as a malware-delivery route. Treat unexpected executable downloads, browser-extension prompts, and instructions to turn off antivirus as serious warning signs.
How to assess a converter before using it
No specific converter is certified as safe by the sources cited here. Assess the service and the data it will handle before uploading anything:

- For Windows 11, 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP (SP2 or later)
- Check the domain and company. Verify that the address is the official website of the service you intended to use. Be wary of copied branding or a domain reached through an unfamiliar advertisement or broad search for “free online file converters.”
- Prefer official sources. If software is needed, obtain it from the software maker’s official site or another official distribution channel. Google advises verifying URLs, heeding browser warnings, and never disabling antivirus to finish an installation.
- Ask whether the file leaves your device. Local processing avoids uploading the document to a converter’s server; a cloud-based service requires sending it to the provider. If the site does not make this clear, do not upload sensitive material.
- Read privacy and deletion terms. Look for what the service says about retaining, using, and deleting submitted files. If those terms are absent or unclear, choose another method for confidential documents.
- Question downloads and permissions. A simple conversion request should not lead you to run an unexpected installer, add a browser extension, paste a command into a terminal, or disable security software.
- Check practical fit and reputation. Confirm the formats and file sizes supported, then consider the service’s independent security reputation. A convenient feature set is not evidence that a service is safe.
Safer ways to convert a file
Start with software you already trust or a conversion feature provided by the application that created the file. If you choose an online service, use its verified official domain and avoid uploading documents containing personal, financial, work, or account information unless you understand how the service processes and retains them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not install a converter just because a webpage says it is required. If the page offers an executable, asks for an extension, or tells you to disable antivirus, stop and leave the site. Keep antivirus current, heed browser warnings, and scan downloaded files before opening them. Scanning is a useful precaution, not a guarantee that a malicious file will be detected.

What to do if you used a suspicious converter
Choose the response that matches what happened. If you are unsure whether a download ran or a file was exposed, take the more cautious path.
If you only uploaded a file
- Assume the information in that file may have been exposed. If it contained passwords, financial details, identity information, or cryptocurrency recovery information, take steps to protect the affected accounts or funds.
- For any password included in the file, change it from a device you believe is clean. Change it anywhere else you reused it, and secure important accounts.
- Contact the relevant financial institution if banking or payment information was included. For exposed cryptocurrency seed phrases, treat the wallet as compromised and follow the wallet provider’s security guidance using a trusted device.
If you downloaded or ran a file, or followed a command prompt
- Stop interacting with the site and its downloads. Do not run the file, paste further commands, or disable antivirus. If you already ran a program or command, avoid using that device to change passwords or access sensitive accounts until it has been checked.
- Run an up-to-date security scan. Use trusted security software to scan the device and downloaded files. If you cannot remove the threat or are unsure whether the device is clean, seek professional malware-removal help.
- Use a clean device to secure accounts. Change passwords that may have been exposed or entered on the affected device, prioritizing email, banking, and other important accounts. Contact financial institutions about potentially exposed financial information.
- Report the incident. The FBI advises reporting these scams to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Keep relevant details, such as the site address and the name of any downloaded file, if you can do so without reopening it.
Google Trust & Safety’s May 2025 guidance is clear on one key point: do not turn off antivirus to complete an installation. If a converter makes that a condition, abandon the installation.
