Security researchers say a sponsored-search scam used attacker-authored content on legitimate ChatGPT URLs to steer visitors to a fake verification page and urge Windows users to run a command. The instruction to paste webpage-provided text into Windows Run was the dangerous step—not a normal ChatGPT sign-in or CAPTCHA. Island’s investigation found no need for a vulnerability in ChatGPT or Google for the chain to work.
How the fake ChatGPT ad scam worked
In an investigation published October 1, 2026, security researchers at Island described sponsored Google results for searches such as “chatgpt.” The reported chain used legitimate chatgpt.com routes containing attacker-authored Custom GPT or shared-chat content. In confirmed cases, unrelated prompts returned the same fake high-traffic warning and a link described as a “backup domain.”
- A user clicked a sponsored search result.
- The result led to a legitimate ChatGPT URL containing attacker-authored content.
- The content presented a warning and directed the user to a purported backup domain.
- That destination redirected to a fake ChatGPT and Cloudflare verification page.
- The page told Windows users to open Run, paste content from the clipboard, and press Enter.
That final instruction is a ClickFix-style social-engineering lure: it tries to persuade the user to execute a command themselves. Island’s isolated analysis of the resulting PowerShell loader found behavior consistent with NetSupport RAT. This describes the researchers’ analysis of the loader, not proof that every visitor executed it or that any particular visitor’s computer was infected. The report also describes separate MSI and WebDAV branches; those should not be treated as steps in one combined sequence. Island’s investigation
Why a legitimate ChatGPT address did not make the content trustworthy
A genuine domain can host user-authored material without endorsing every instruction or link in that material. In this case, the researchers attributed the malicious content to attacker-authored Custom GPT or shared-chat content on legitimate routes. They saw the same response across two distinct Custom GPT destinations over three days, “regardless of the request,” but said they had not inspected the GPT configurations and could not establish where or how the reply was configured.
The reported chain abused sponsored search, attacker-authored content, redirects, and a user-executed command. Island said it did not require a vulnerability in ChatGPT or Google. The domain in the address bar is useful evidence, but it cannot by itself establish that a particular prompt, link, or download is safe.
What the reported numbers do—and do not—mean
Island reported about 850 paid-ad landings, 26 lookalike ChatGPT destinations, and 71 Google Ads campaign IDs in a broader delivery cluster observed through August 2026. These are infrastructure and landing observations, not counts of people, command executions, or infections. Island said only a small subset of the destinations was confirmed to serve this exact lure. Its records document observations, not verified campaign start and end dates. No victim total or independently confirmed infection count was established in the cited reporting.
How to tell a real download or verification step from a dangerous one
Get ChatGPT apps from official channels
Avoid sponsored search results when looking for software downloads. The Federal Trade Commission advises typing a known website address or scrolling past ads, and OpenAI says to obtain its apps through in-app updates or official webpages—not ads, messages, file-sharing links, or third-party download sites. Never paste a webpage’s command into Run or PowerShell to prove you are human
A verification page should not ask you to open Windows Run or PowerShell and execute clipboard text. Stop if a page asks for that action, regardless of whether it uses ChatGPT or Cloudflare branding. The reported lure used precisely this instruction to get a visitor to run a command.

What to do if you followed the instructions
If you opened the page but did not run anything
Close it and do not follow its download or command instructions. A visit alone is not evidence that malware ran; the reported ClickFix step depended on getting the user to execute the command.

Google’s response
Tom’s Guide reported that a Google spokesperson said the advertiser accounts involved had been suspended before its report was published and that Google had updated defenses to detect the tactics. That response does not change the practical warning: a sponsored result or a familiar-looking verification page is not a reason to execute a command. Tom’s Guide report
