A fake CAPTCHA can copy a command to your clipboard and pressure you to run it—but the click itself is not the same as installing malware. In documented Windows campaigns, the infection chain continued only after visitors pasted and executed the command, often through the Windows Run dialog. Treat any website that asks you to run pasted commands as a serious warning sign.
How a fake CAPTCHA can lead to malware
These lures use a social-engineering technique often called ClickFix. A page imitates a familiar “I’m not a robot” check, then tells the visitor to complete an unexpected step outside the browser. The page may put a command on the clipboard, but the visitor is then manipulated into pasting and running it. A CAPTCHA is not supposed to require opening Windows Run, PowerShell, Terminal, or another command interface.
Microsoft documented a May 2025 campaign in which JavaScript injected into compromised websites retrieved ClickFix content and showed a fake verification prompt. Clicking the prompt copied a command; the page instructed the visitor to open Windows Run, paste it, and launch it. In that campaign, the command used mshta to retrieve and start additional code, and the activity delivered Lumma Stealer. That is one observed chain, not a template for every fake CAPTCHA: Microsoft’s campaign report.

The command retrieved another script from an attacker-controlled server; Mandiant’s analysis associated the chain with CORNFLAKE.V3, a backdoor. The familiar logo did not make the prompt authentic: Mandiant’s CORNFLAKE.V3 analysis.

Where the lures appear—and how observed campaigns differ
A fake verification prompt can show up during ordinary browsing. HP Wolf Security described lures arriving through web advertisements, search-engine optimization hijacking, and redirects from compromised websites. Its analyzed example used a copied PowerShell script to download a large payload, unpack software in AppData, and create a Registry Run key for persistence; the payload was Lumma Stealer. Those details describe that case, not steps every fake CAPTCHA will take: HP Wolf Security’s campaign analysis.

What to do if a page asks you to run a command
- Do not paste or execute it. Close the page or tab. A request to prove you are human by running a command is not a legitimate CAPTCHA step.
- Do not trust the logo or wording alone. Fake pages can reproduce a familiar “I’m not a robot” prompt; the appearance of a brand does not authenticate the page.
- Remember what a click does—and does not prove. In the documented Windows chains, clicking the lure changed the clipboard, while execution required the visitor to paste and run the command. That distinction does not establish that every suspicious page is harmless when clicked; the cited examples do not cover every possible page behavior.
If you already pasted and ran the command
Stop using the affected device for sensitive activity and contact your organization’s security team or trusted incident-response support. Do not assume the result is a particular malware family, and do not treat a single scan as proof that the incident is resolved. The appropriate next steps depend on the device and the command that actually ran.

In a managed environment, report what happened promptly and preserve details such as the page address and approximate time if you can do so safely. Security teams can use command history and suspicious script activity as investigative leads, but a single alert or indicator does not by itself establish an infection.
Defenses for Windows users and administrators
For personal browsing, the most important behavioral rule is simple: never execute a command supplied by a website as a CAPTCHA, verification step, or “fix.” For organizations, mitigations should match the environment and risk.

- Consider limiting Windows Run where appropriate. HP says administrators can disable Windows Run through Group Policy when users do not need it. This is an administrative control, not a universal recommendation for every Windows device.
- Review clipboard sharing in managed deployments. HP says HP Sure Click Enterprise deployments can disable clipboard sharing. That control applies to those deployments and does not make other environments immune.
- Use layered protections. For the Lumma threat it documented, Microsoft recommends Defender endpoint, network, and web protections; attack-surface-reduction rules; MFA and phishing-resistant authentication; and SmartScreen. These measures can reduce risk but are not a guarantee that a threat will be prevented: Microsoft’s guidance.
How defenders should interpret alerts
Microsoft lists alerts and detections related to suspicious commands in RunMRU, suspicious PowerShell, possible theft of browser information, and FakeCaptcha/ClickFix activity. Mandiant also noted that a RunMRU entry helped investigators identify its analyzed activity. These are investigative clues, not a self-diagnosis checklist: Microsoft cautions that some relevant alerts can also be triggered by unrelated activity. Review them with surrounding endpoint and script evidence rather than treating one indicator as proof of compromise: Microsoft’s detection guidance.

The campaign reports document different outcomes: Microsoft and HP describe Lumma Stealer in their respective cases, while Mandiant describes a separate chain involving CORNFLAKE.V3. A fake CAPTCHA is a delivery tactic, not the name of one malware family. The reports do not establish a universal infection rate or show that every such page steals the same information.
