A familiar logo, an unusually low price and a “limited time” message can make a social-media ad feel like a deal you need to grab now. But appearing in a feed does not prove that the seller is legitimate or that the platform verified the advertiser. Before clicking or paying, check who is actually selling the item and confirm the offer through the brand’s official channel.

How fake brand-discount ads work

Scammers sometimes use a real company’s name, logo or product images in paid social-media ads. A click may take you to an unfamiliar site impersonating the brand. The site may be built to collect payment or personal information; a buyer may receive counterfeit goods, receive nothing, or face other misuse of their information. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes this pattern in its advice on big-brand discounts advertised on social media.

A real-looking ad and a familiar platform are not proof of legitimacy. The FTC says platforms do not always thoroughly vet ads or advertisers, and anyone can pay to place an ad. Treat the ad as a lead to investigate, not as an endorsement.

Why urgency is a warning sign

Countdowns, “limited time” claims and dramatic discounts can make a shopper feel they will miss out by pausing. The FTC says impersonation scammers play on excitement and worry, rush people and make warning signs harder to notice. That supports treating pressure as a reason to slow down; it does not establish how often fear of missing out causes someone to buy.

Check a social-media brand sale before buying

  1. Identify the seller. Find the business name behind the offer, rather than assuming it is the brand whose logo appears in the ad. If the seller is unclear, that is a reason not to proceed.
  2. Search independently. Search the seller’s name with terms such as “scam,” “complaint” or “review.” Read results critically; a lack of complaints is not proof that a seller is safe.
  3. Compare the price. Check what the item costs from other sellers. The FTC says, “If the ad offers prices that are much, much lower, it’s probably a scam.” An unusually low price is a warning sign, not conclusive proof on its own.
  4. Verify with the brand directly. Type the brand’s known website address yourself or use a contact channel you already trust. Check whether the brand’s own site or channel confirms the promotion and seller. Do not rely on links, phone numbers or contact details supplied in a suspicious ad.
  5. Stop if the details do not line up. If the seller, price or promotion cannot be independently confirmed, do not click through to pay or enter personal information.

What FTC figures say about social-media shopping scams

The FTC’s April 2026 data spotlight reports that consumers identified social media as the contact method in fraud reports with $2.1 billion in reported losses in 2025. That total covers social-media-initiated scams broadly, not just fake brand-discount ads. The FTC also says more than 40% of people who lost money to a social-media scam said it started when they ordered something they saw in an ad. That percentage applies to those social-media scam reports—not to all ad viewers or shoppers.

Separately, an FTC August 2026 consumer alert reports more than $95 million in reported losses in 2025 to scams that began when people ordered something after seeing a social-media ad. This shopping-ad figure covers more than brand impersonation discount scams. These figures are based on reports, not a complete count of all losses; the FTC says many scams go unreported. The FTC uses consumer reports as an input to analysis and enforcement, while noting that many scams go unreported. Its March 2025 fraud-data release explains that context.
