Fairphone’s 2025 Fairbuds XL refresh pairs modular construction with energetic, bass-forward sound—but its repairability is the clearest reason to choose it, not a guarantee of the best audio or lowest ownership cost. Fairphone still calls the headphones Fairbuds XL; iFixit calls the 2025 refresh “Gen. 2.”
What changed in the 2025 Fairbuds XL?
The 2025 refresh keeps Fairphone’s Fairbuds XL name. The “Gen. 2” label comes from iFixit’s description of the refresh, rather than Fairphone’s product naming. Fairphone lists 40 mm dynamic drivers, active noise cancellation (ANC), an ambient mode and Bluetooth 5.1 multipoint on its product page.
Fairphone claims up to 30 hours of playback with ANC off, or up to 26 hours with ANC on. It also says the battery retains 80% capacity after 500 full charge cycles. These are manufacturer specifications and claims; the cited material does not establish independent battery-test results.
How do the Fairbuds XL sound and feel?
In its December 9, 2025 review, TechRadar’s reviewer describes lively, bass-forward sound, a comfortable fit and a distinctive, enjoyable joystick control. The trade-off in that reviewer’s listening was less detail and spaciousness than some rival headphones offer. The review also notes a sparse app and limited feature set. Those are one reviewer’s impressions, not a direct comparative test or a universal verdict.
#1 Best Overall
- 40mm dynamic drivers: The Fairbuds XL offer premium sound that is built to last. Explore a wide sonic range with every detail highlighted: clear highs, warm mids, and deep bass, with a natural sound profile and a balanced stereo image. It also supports aptX-HD over wireless Bluetooth for 24-bit sound that is studio-quality. Experience sound the way it was created.
- Advanced Noise-Canceling: The Fairbuds XL are perfect for everywhere - in the gym, on the train, or for some much needed 'me-time'. Thanks to its advanced active noise-cancelling, no place is too loud to disturb the way it sounds. Want to drill down and focus? Spend some quality time with nostalgic playlists? Switch on active mode for a fully immersive experience. Don't want to zone out completely? Toggle ambient mode instead and keep one ear out for what's happening in the background.
- 30 hours of battery runtime: The Fairbuds XL are big on sound, and big on battery life. Its 800mAH battery is designed to go up to 30 hours on a single charge. Even with active noise-cancelling on the whole time, it can last up to 26 hours. The battery is designed to last long as well, rated for 500 charging cycles. And when that's up, swap in a brand new one to keep the sound going. Don't want to depend on a battery? Plug them in with a USB-C cable and go wired and totally charge-free.
- Seamless dual point connectivity: The Fairbuds XL make multipoint connectivity so easy. Connect to two devices at the same time with the Fairbuds XL, while switching between them is a just a button tap away. Pair the Fairbuds XL to a laptop and a smartphone at the same time, and move from one to the other seamlessly.
- Foldable. Weatherproof. Universal: The Fairbuds XL are not only modular, they sport a travel-friendly foldable design that makes it more compact than ever. It even comes with a handy pouch to take it on-the go. They are also IP54-rated for dust and moisture, making them ideal for an outdoor run in light rain, or a heavy-duty workout session.
That makes the Fairbuds XL a more persuasive option if you value an engaging, bass-led presentation and intuitive physical controls than if your priority is extracting the most detail or getting a broad suite of app features. The available review does not provide a complete head-to-head comparison, so it cannot support a definitive ranking against Bose, Sony or other over-ear models.
What can you repair or replace?
Fairphone says the headphones have nine replaceable modules. The company’s FAQ names them as:

Did we mention you can replace the battery?

- Speaker covers
- Headband
- Headband base
- Headband cover
- Ear cushions
- Left speaker
- Right speaker
Fairphone’s replacement guide provides instructions for the listed parts and recommends contacting customer support if you are not comfortable doing a repair yourself. The FAQ says these modules are offered through Fairphone’s European webshop, so availability elsewhere is not established by the cited material. It also says the PCB and USB-C module can be repaired as expert operations, but those components are not currently offered in the shop.
Modular parts turn some wear or failures into repair options rather than an automatic reason to replace the whole headset. They do not, by themselves, prove that a repair will be easy, affordable, available when needed or worthwhile for every owner. The practical case depends on compatible parts being in stock and on their cost, shipping and the owner’s willingness to follow the repair instructions.

How does the warranty affect ownership?
Fairphone advertises three-year warranty coverage for the refreshed model, but coverage is component-specific. Its FAQ says manufacturing issues are covered and user-caused damage is not, and identifies exclusions involving the battery and wearable materials such as ear cushions. Check the current terms for your region and component before relying on warranty coverage.
Do not assume the same extended coverage applies to the earlier Fairbuds XL: Fairphone says the extended warranty program was designed for the 2025 product. The earlier version remains repairable, according to the FAQ, but does not receive that specific extended coverage.

Is repairability a convincing alternative to disposable headphones?
It is a meaningful alternative when the part that fails is replaceable, the right module is accessible and the repair makes financial sense. A replaceable battery is particularly relevant because battery capacity declines with use; replaceable cushions and headband components also give owners options when wearable parts deteriorate. Fairphone’s 500-cycle and 80%-capacity figures are its own battery claim, not independently verified here.

Nor does repairability alone establish lower lifetime cost or environmental impact.
