Godlike.Host offers hosted Factorio servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Factorio server administration centers on a small set of console commands: /promote, /demote, /kick, /ban, /unban, /admin, /admins and /bans. Use /kick for a one-time removal, /ban to block a player from rejoining, and /unban to reverse that block. For a dedicated headless server, you can also define administrators in server-settings.json. Because command availability can vary by Factorio version and source, confirm anything outside the core set with the installed game’s /help output.
Core Factorio admin commands
Enter commands in Factorio’s in-game chat. A leading slash identifies a console command; replace each name placeholder with the player’s in-game username. The official Factorio wiki console reference identifies the following commands and permissions.

Factorio’s own command parser and the /help response in your installed version take precedence if syntax or permissions differ. Names, spaces and punctuation matter; quote or escape text only if the game’s help output shows that your version supports it.
How to become an admin on a Factorio server
You cannot grant yourself administrator privileges as an ordinary connected player. An existing administrator must promote you, or the owner of a dedicated server must add you to its administrator settings.

Have an existing admin promote you
- Join the server with the exact in-game username you want to administer.
- Ask an existing admin to open chat and run
/promote YourName, replacingYourNamewith your username. - Run
/adminsto print the current administrator list and verify that your name appears. - Use an admin-only action, such as opening
/admin, only after the promotion is visible. If it fails, check spelling, capitalization and whether the promoting player is still an admin.
The command operates on Factorio’s player name, not an external account label or a nickname displayed by a hosting panel. If the name contains unusual characters, copy it from the player list where possible.
Set administrators before anyone joins a headless server
The official wiki states that administrators for a headless server can be set by editing server-settings.json. This is useful when the server has no connected administrator yet, or when you are recovering access after demoting the last admin.

- Open the server’s
server-settings.jsonwith a text editor. Use the file supplied with your Factorio server version as the formatting reference. - Set the administrator list according to the structure in that version’s sample settings file. Keep the JSON valid: preserve quotation marks, commas and brackets, and do not add comments.
- Enter each username exactly as it appears in Factorio. A third-party hosting guide specifically warns that matching is case sensitive, so
PlayerNameandplayernamemay not be equivalent. - Save the file, start the server and connect with one of the listed names.
- Run
/adminsin game to confirm that the server loaded the list.
Do not assume that a control-panel account name, Steam display name or operating-system user is the value Factorio expects. If the list does not load, stop the server again and validate the JSON and the exact username before trying a command-based promotion.

Kick versus ban: choose the right action
A kick is temporary session control; a ban is a rejoin restriction. The distinction matters when deciding whether a player should be able to return immediately.

The kick behavior comes from a community-authored wiki draft, so treat it as a practical description rather than a stronger official guarantee. The operational difference is nevertheless straightforward: kicking ends the present connection, while banning blocks subsequent joins. A ban can be applied even when the target is offline, which is useful for acting on a username reported after the player has disconnected.
Include a useful reason
Although the reason argument for /ban is optional in practice, a short factual reason improves moderation records and helps other admins understand what happened. For example, /ban xTROLLx Throwing grenades in base states the behavior without adding an argument. Use the same standard for kick reasons, such as identifying the rule or immediate risk that prompted removal.

Using the player-management GUI
Administrators who do not want to remember command syntax can run /admin to open Factorio’s player-management interface. The GUI is an alternative to typing moderation commands, not a separate permission system: opening it itself requires admin status. Select the relevant player and choose the available management action shown by your version. If a control is missing, first verify that you are listed by /admins and then consult /help for that build.
Commands reported by third-party guides
Hosting guides and community lists describe additional commands, but they do not agree with one another and several are absent from the official English console reference. Treat these as version- or configuration-dependent until your server confirms them.

Differences between these lists are a reason to avoid copying a command sheet blindly. Factorio releases can change command names, permissions or side effects, and a hosting provider may expose only a subset of the game’s console. The installed version’s /help output is the practical authority for your server.

Running admin commands through RCON
One hosting guide reports that admin commands can be sent over RCON on dedicated servers. RCON access is separate from in-game chat: it requires the server’s RCON feature and credentials to be configured, and it should be protected like any other remote administration interface. Before automating a command, verify that the RCON endpoint is enabled for your Factorio version and that the command returns the same result as it does in game.

- Restrict RCON exposure to trusted network addresses or a private management network.
- Use a strong, unique RCON password and protect it from public logs and scripts.
- Test a harmless read-only command, such as
/adminsor/bans, before sending moderation actions. - Keep an audit record of who issued bans, kicks or promotions and why.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Unknown command”
Run /help and compare the spelling with the command listed by your server. Do not substitute /banlist for /bans unless your build documents it. Restarting the server will not add a command that the installed version does not provide; you may need to update Factorio or use the supported alternative.
“You are not an admin”
Ask an existing admin to run /admins. If your name is absent, have that admin run /promote YourName again. On a headless server, stop it and inspect server-settings.json for invalid JSON, a wrong file, or a username whose capitalization does not match Factorio’s player name.

The player can reconnect after a kick
This is expected. A kick ends the current session but does not create a ban. Use /ban <player> <reason> when the player must be blocked from rejoining, then use /unban <player> when the restriction should be removed.
A ban appears not to work
Check the spelling of the target name and use /bans to inspect the list. Because bans can target players who are not currently on the map, an absent player is not evidence that the command failed. If the list does not change, confirm that the command was issued by an admin and that the server accepted the syntax shown by /help.
The settings-file admin list is ignored
Verify that you edited the server’s active server-settings.json, not a template or a different instance, and that the server was stopped before saving. Validate JSON punctuation and exact username capitalization, restart, and then check /admins.
