In April 2021, Facebook employees were reportedly allowed to buy an Oculus Quest 2 and expense the purchase through the company. That was a reimbursement offer, not a report that Facebook handed every employee a free headset. The announcement was described in contemporary coverage of an internal Q&A; the available reporting does not establish whether the benefit is still active or how many employees claimed it.
What Facebook reportedly offered employees
UploadVR reported on April 29, 2021, that Mark Zuckerberg mentioned the offer during an internal employee Q&A. Its account, attributed to journalist Alex Heath, said employees could expense the purchase of an Oculus Quest 2. Futurism reported the same purchase-and-expense arrangement the following day, also citing Heath’s reporting: UploadVR’s April 29, 2021 report and Futurism’s April 30, 2021 report.
The distinction matters: the reports describe employees buying the headset and seeking reimbursement, rather than receiving a device directly from Facebook. Neither report supplies detailed rules such as reimbursement limits, eligibility conditions, or a deadline.
Why the offer was linked to wellness
Contemporary coverage connected the benefit to health and wellness, pointing to the use of virtual reality for exercise. UploadVR mentioned fitness apps including Supernatural and FitXR. Futurism described the wellness classification as something Zuckerberg speculated about, so it is better understood as a reported rationale than as a fully documented formal policy statement. The reporting does not establish that either app was required, included, or specially covered by the offer.

How many employees received a headset?
UploadVR said Facebook had just over 60,000 employees at the end of March 2021 and reported year-over-year headcount growth of 26%. Those are workforce figures, not headset claims: the report did not say how many employees bought a Quest 2 or obtained reimbursement. No uptake total is established in the cited contemporary coverage.
Later VR workplace context
In August 2021, Facebook introduced Horizon Workrooms, a virtual-reality meeting app in beta. Axios described features including spatial audio, shared whiteboards, and the ability to use a PC or Mac screen in a virtual meeting; people without headsets could participate by video. Its report also noted battery life as a limitation during the reporter’s one-hour demonstration. This later product context does not show that Workrooms motivated the April reimbursement offer or that employees used their reimbursed headsets for work meetings. Is the employee benefit still available?
The cited reports document an offer reported in April 2021, not a current policy. They do not establish whether Facebook—or Meta, the company’s later name—continues to reimburse employees for a Quest 2, what present-day terms would apply, or whether the Quest 2 is currently available through the company’s product listings. Meta’s virtual reality newsroom provides current product-family context, but it does not verify the status of this historical employee benefit.
