“Facebook smart glasses” usually means Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses: eyewear made by Meta and EssilorLuxottica that combines a camera, microphones, open-ear audio and phone connectivity. Some features, including Meta AI, depend on the model, software and region. “Facebook” is the older company name; the current product is branded Meta.
What are Facebook smart glasses?
They are connected glasses designed to look and function like conventional eyewear while adding hands-free technology. They are not a standalone virtual-reality headset, and the name does not mean every pair has an in-lens display. The product name used today is Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.
Meta and EssilorLuxottica introduced the collection as eyewear with a camera, microphones, speakers and phone-app connectivity. The capabilities available to a wearer can vary by model, software version and country.
What can Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses do?
- Capture photos and video: The wearer can record first-person images and clips hands-free. Meta’s 2023 announcement specified a 12-megapixel camera and video at 1080p for up to 60 seconds; those are launch-era figures, not guarantees for every current model. Meta’s 2023 announcement

- Use voice features: Supported configurations can offer voice interaction with Meta AI. Which functions and languages are available depends on software and location.
- Livestream: Meta’s launch announcement included livestreaming to Facebook or Instagram. Availability may vary by product and software.
The same 2023 announcements listed IPX4 water resistance, prescription-lens compatibility and a launch assortment of 21 style, color and lens variations. These details describe the announced generation and should not be assumed to apply identically to all later models or configurations.

How do recording and privacy signals work?
Meta says a white capture LED blinks when the glasses capture gallery content, and that covering or disabling the LED disables the camera. Meta also says photos and videos remain on the glasses until the wearer chooses to import them to a phone. Its smart-glasses FAQ and responsible-innovation page describe controls in the Meta AI app for capture, voice, notifications and sharing. These are Meta’s descriptions of its product and policies, not independent verification of privacy outcomes.
Meta’s guidance is to respect other people’s preferences and stop recording if someone objects. The Associated Press has reported privacy concerns and restrictions at some venues and retailers. AP’s reporting Local recording laws and venue rules vary, so check the applicable requirements rather than assuming one rule applies everywhere.

What should you check before choosing a pair?
- Confirm the exact model and its current camera, audio and battery specifications.
- Check whether the AI features and languages you want are supported where you live.
- Verify compatibility with your phone and the required companion app.
- Confirm available frames, lenses and prescription options for your needs.
- Review the current privacy controls and the recording rules that apply in places where you plan to use them.
