For a typical portrait Facebook feed image, start with 1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5). Use 1080 × 1080 pixels (1:1) when a square layout fits your design or you need one asset that adapts easily to multiple surfaces. These are practical working recommendations, not a single, universally confirmed official canvas requirement for every organic Facebook post. Stories and Reels use a different vertical canvas, link previews come from website metadata, and ads have placement-specific specifications.

Facebook post image size in pixels at a glance

Placement Common working dimensions Aspect ratio What to know
Portrait organic feed photo 1080 × 1350 px 4:5 A common recommendation from secondary publishing guides; not verified as a universal official organic-post requirement.
Square organic feed photo 1080 × 1080 px 1:1 A practical alternative when the composition is naturally square.
Landscape or link-preview image 1200 × 630 px About 1.91:1 Often used for link previews; Facebook fetches the image from page metadata such as og:image.
Story or Reel 1080 × 1920 px 9:16 A separate full-screen vertical placement, not a feed-photo canvas.
Feed image ad 1440 × 1800 px 4:5 A reported advertising specification, not a required size for an organic upload.

Facebook can render the same file differently by placement, device and product version. Treat the figures above as production canvases, then inspect the preview in the publishing flow. Paid creative should be checked against the current settings for the exact ad placement.

Which size should you choose?

Choose 1080 × 1350 for a portrait feed post

A 4:5 image occupies more vertical space in a mobile feed than a square image while keeping a widely supported ratio. It works well for portraits, product shots, step-by-step graphics and posters with a clear central subject. Keep important text and faces away from the extreme top and bottom edges because interface elements or a crop can cover them.

Choose 1080 × 1080 for a square design

Square artwork is useful for logos, simple announcements, album-style graphics and assets shared across several social surfaces. It avoids the need to redesign a composition that was built around equal width and height. A square file can still be displayed in different containers, so review the Facebook preview rather than assuming every view will remain perfectly square.

Use 1200 × 630 for a link preview

A link preview is not the same as an image you upload directly. Facebook generally obtains the preview image from the linked page, commonly through the og:image metadata. A 1200 × 630 canvas (approximately 1.91:1) is a common working choice for that metadata image. Update the page metadata and allow Facebook to refresh its cached preview when changing the artwork.

Use 1080 × 1920 for Stories and Reels

Stories and Reels are designed for a 9:16, full-screen vertical frame. Reusing a 4:5 feed image leaves unused space or forces a crop. Compose with a central safe area: profile controls, captions, buttons and other overlays can occupy portions of the top and bottom of the screen.

Keep ad specifications separate

Advertising systems can prescribe different dimensions for each placement. One secondary specification compilation reports 1440 × 1800 pixels at 4:5 for a feed image ad. That figure should not be presented as the mandatory canvas for an organic photo. Select the placement in Ads Manager and follow the dimensions shown there at the time you upload.

How to prepare an image at the correct pixel dimensions

  1. Identify the destination. Decide whether the file is an organic feed photo, link-preview image, Story, Reel or ad. Do not resize before making this choice.
  2. Create the canvas. Set width and height in pixels, not inches. For a portrait feed post enter 1080 for width and 1350 for height; for square enter 1080 and 1080.
  3. Place the subject inside the safe area. Leave breathing room around faces, logos and text. Avoid putting small type directly against an edge.
  4. Crop deliberately. If the source is wider or taller than the target ratio, crop the least important background first. Do not stretch the image, which changes faces and circles into visibly distorted shapes.
  5. Export a web image. JPEG is suitable for photographs; PNG is useful for sharp text or transparency; WebP can reduce file size where your workflow accepts it. Use the editor’s standard sRGB/web color option.
  6. Check the exported file. Confirm the actual pixel dimensions in your operating system or editor. A file named “1080” may still have been exported at a different size.
  7. Preview on a phone-sized screen. Look for tiny text, clipped borders and important details hidden by the interface. Correct those issues before publishing.

Crop and composition guidance

Design for the ratio, not just the raw pixels

Two files can both be high resolution but behave differently if their ratios differ. A 1600 × 900 landscape image must be cropped or padded to become 4:5; simply reducing its width does not solve the shape mismatch. Keep a master file so you can make separate 4:5, 1:1 and 9:16 exports instead of repeatedly cropping an already compressed copy.

Protect text and logos

Use larger type than you would for a desktop presentation. A viewer may see the post in a narrow feed column, and Facebook’s interface can cover edges in some contexts. Check contrast against the background and test the smallest text at the size most readers will actually see.

Photographs versus graphics

Photographs usually tolerate JPEG compression. Screenshots, line drawings and text-heavy announcements retain cleaner edges as PNG or a high-quality JPEG. If a platform or publishing tool recompresses the upload, inspect the final preview rather than relying only on the local file.

Organic post, link preview and ad: the distinctions that prevent mistakes

  • Organic uploaded photo: You select the image file in Facebook. The 1080 × 1350 and 1080 × 1080 figures are practical recommendations, not a confirmed universal official requirement.
  • Link preview: Facebook retrieves an image from the destination page. Correct the page’s og:image and related metadata instead of uploading a feed photo and expecting it to control the preview.
  • Story or Reel: The 9:16 vertical frame needs its own crop and safe-area design.
  • Ad: Dimensions depend on the selected placement and may differ from organic-post guidance. Follow the current Ads Manager specification for that placement.

There is no verified controlled comparison showing that 4:5 consistently outperforms 1:1. Choose the ratio that preserves the subject and communicates clearly in the intended placement.

File size, quality and accessibility checks

  • Resize from the original whenever possible; enlarging a small image cannot restore missing detail.
  • Keep a lossless master and export a delivery copy, so later crops do not accumulate compression artifacts.
  • Use descriptive post text and captions for essential information; text embedded in an image is not a substitute for accessible copy.
  • Check that color, contrast and type remain legible in both light and dark viewing environments.
  • Review the upload over a normal mobile connection. An unnecessarily large file delays publishing and previewing, while excessive compression produces blocky gradients and unreadable text.

Troubleshooting common size and crop problems

Facebook crops the top or bottom

Confirm the file’s actual ratio. If it is not 4:5, 1:1 or the ratio you designed for, Facebook may fit it into the available container. Re-export at the target dimensions and move critical content inward.

The link preview shows an old image

The preview is fetched from page metadata and may be cached. Confirm that og:image points to the new, publicly reachable file, then use Facebook’s current link-preview refresh process or wait for the cache to update. This is separate from changing an uploaded feed photo.

The image looks soft after upload

Start with a sufficiently large source, export once at the target dimensions, and avoid repeatedly saving a JPEG. Text-heavy graphics may benefit from PNG or a higher-quality JPEG export.

Text is hidden behind Story or Reel controls

Move text and logos toward the center and preview the complete vertical frame with the platform controls visible. Create a 9:16-specific version instead of placing a 4:5 feed graphic on a Story.

An ad is rejected or marked as unsuitable

Check the selected placement’s current specification in Ads Manager. A reported 1440 × 1800 ad canvas does not establish a universal rule for every ad placement or for organic posts.

Automate previews and page screenshots

If you need to verify how a published page or campaign landing page appears before sharing it, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can capture PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF output, load lazy images, wait for a selector or network idle, apply custom CSS, hide selectors, use device presets and viewport sizes, and capture an individual element. Its cookie/consent handling accepts the banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled.

Or skip the browser setup

One GET request returns the rendered result. Replace the URL with the page you want to inspect.

ScreenshotNeo API documentation

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed as clean shots, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

A practical decision checklist

  • Publishing a portrait feed photo? Export 1080 × 1350 px (4:5).
  • Publishing a square composition? Export 1080 × 1080 px (1:1).
  • Sharing a URL? Set a roughly 1200 × 630 px og:image and validate the page metadata.
  • Creating a Story or Reel? Build a separate 1080 × 1920 px (9:16) design.
  • Running an ad? Use the specification shown for the exact placement in Ads Manager.
  • Before publishing, inspect the real preview for crops, overlays, legibility and loading quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 1080 × 1350 an official Facebook requirement?

It is a commonly reported portrait-feed working recommendation. A universal official pixel requirement for every organic post was not verified, so treat it as a practical canvas rather than a mandate.

Can I use one image for feed, Stories and Reels?

You can, but one crop will not fit all placements well. Export separate 4:5, 1:1 and 9:16 versions when the subject or text needs precise positioning.

What controls the image in a Facebook link preview?

The linked page’s metadata, commonly its og:image, controls the fetched preview image. It is different from an image uploaded directly to a feed post.
