Facebook presents the same cover in different crops on computers and phones, so keep essential wording and branding near the center. The 851 × 315 cover recommendation and 400 × 150 minimum are Meta-attributed figures reported by Businessman Talk in 2026. The 320 × 320 profile guidance comes from the Facebook Help Center page accessed in 2026. Facebook can change composer labels and rendering, so preview the finished file in the Page composer before publishing.
Why one cover looks different on desktop and mobile
A Page cover is not displayed at one fixed ratio. The cited Meta guidance describes a roughly 16:9 presentation on computers and a much wider 2.4:1 presentation on phones, with the image shown as a left-aligned full-bleed banner. Facebook therefore crops or scales the same source differently depending on the device and available layout.

- Put the headline, logo, product name and call to action in the central portion of the 851 × 315 canvas.
- Do not rely on the extreme left or right edges for information; those areas are the first to disappear when the mobile crop is applied.
- Keep important details above the lower-left area, where profile information and Page controls can overlap the cover in some layouts.
- Use a background, texture or photograph that still looks intentional after either crop removes peripheral content.
These are composition safeguards, not a promise of a permanently fixed safe-zone pixel measurement. Facebook’s layout varies by screen width, browser, app version and Page state. The reliable test is to upload the image, inspect both desktop and phone previews, and revise the source rather than adding text at the edges.
A practical cover-photo safe-area template
Start with an 851 × 315 document. Treat the outer margins as expendable background and reserve the center for content that must survive both reported crops.

Text and logo checklist
- Use one short message rather than a paragraph; small type becomes unreadable after responsive scaling.
- Choose strong contrast between text and its background.
- Leave breathing room around a logo so a crop does not cut its mark or tagline.
- Check that faces, products and screenshots remain recognizable when the sides are hidden.
- Keep the original editable file so you can adjust the crop without degrading the image repeatedly.
Choosing JPG or PNG
sRGB JPG for photographic covers
The Meta-attributed recommendation identifies an sRGB JPG as the fastest-loading choice for a cover. JPG is generally suitable for photographs, gradients and other continuous-tone artwork. Export in the sRGB color space so colors do not shift between design software, browsers and Facebook’s processing.
PNG for crisp text and logos
A PNG can produce a cleaner result when the cover is mostly flat color, contains fine lettering or depends on a logo with hard edges. PNG files can be larger than comparable JPGs, and the cited guidance does not establish a universal maximum file size. Export the smallest file that preserves legibility, then inspect the uploaded result rather than assuming the source will be shown pixel-for-pixel.

No single current file-size limit or compression percentage is established in the supplied Meta-attributed figures. If Facebook rejects an upload, reduce dimensions or compression complexity gradually, confirm the file is a standard RGB JPG or PNG, and try again. Designing for the circular crop
- Center the symbol, initials or face in the square.
- Keep lettering large and limit it to a few characters.
- Leave an internal margin around the mark; the circular mask removes the corners and can trim artwork placed too close to the edge.
- Test the image at the small size used beside posts and comments, not only in the large Page header.
The profile and cover photos are public. Facebook’s Help Center states: “Your current profile picture and cover photo are public, so they can be seen by anyone on or off Facebook.” They may appear on the Page, in feeds, albums and thumbnails, so do not include information that should be restricted to followers.
How to make and verify the files
- Create the cover: open a new document at 851 × 315 px in sRGB. If you are adapting an existing design, crop or reposition it instead of stretching faces or logos.
- Build the safe composition: place required text and branding in the central band, keeping the lower-left and outer edges mostly decorative.
- Export a test file: choose JPG for a photo-led design or PNG for sharp type and logos. Keep a high-quality master separately.
- Create the profile image: use a square canvas at least 320 × 320 px, center the mark and leave room for the circular mask.
- Open the Page composer: choose the option to add or edit the cover or profile photo, select the exported file and use Facebook’s positioning controls.
- Preview both contexts: inspect the desktop presentation and a phone-sized view. Look specifically for clipped words, hidden faces, low contrast and interface overlap.
- Publish only after checking: refresh the public Page and a recent post or thumbnail to confirm that the image remains legible outside the composer.
Common problems and fixes
“My cover is cropped on mobile.”
This is expected when one source is adapted to the reported 16:9 desktop and 2.4:1 mobile presentations. Move essential content toward the center, remove edge-dependent text and preview again. Do not add side borders merely to preserve a desktop composition; they can make the phone crop look awkward.

Confirm that the source is at least 851 × 315, exported in sRGB and not repeatedly recompressed. For a design dominated by lettering or a logo, compare a properly exported PNG with an sRGB JPG. Test the actual uploaded image at thumbnail scale; text that is technically sharp can still be too small to read.
“The profile logo is cut off.”
Recenter it on a square canvas and increase the internal margin. The circular display removes corners, and the profile image can be rendered much smaller beside posts than in the Page header.

“Facebook will not accept my file.”
Save a fresh copy as a standard RGB (sRGB) JPG or PNG, verify that the dimensions are not below the relevant minimum, and retry from the current Page composer. If the problem persists, reduce the export complexity or dimensions modestly rather than scaling a tiny source upward. Facebook’s interface and validation rules can change, so note the exact error shown by your account and app version.
“The colors changed after upload.”
Convert the artwork to sRGB before export. Wide-gamut or untagged files can be interpreted differently by browsers and Facebook’s processing pipeline.

- Loading: an sRGB JPG is the stated fastest-loading cover choice; remove unnecessary metadata and export at a quality setting that keeps text and edges clean.
- Readability: use sufficient contrast and do not put critical text over a busy photograph. The cover is decorative context, not a substitute for the Page name or an accessible text description.
- Responsive review: recheck after major Facebook layout changes, a branding update or a change in the Page’s profile image, since surrounding controls affect perceived safe space.
- Version control: keep dated masters and a note of the dimensions, color space and export format used. That makes seasonal updates reversible.
- Privacy: because current profile and cover photos are public, remove phone numbers, private addresses, unreleased product details and other information that should not be broadly visible.
