Facebook and Instagram were unavailable for about 45 minutes on January 27, 2015. Facebook said an internal change affecting its configuration systems caused the disruption and denied that a third-party attack was responsible. Lizard Squad appeared to claim responsibility, but the contemporaneous report did not verify that claim.
Why were Facebook and Instagram down?
TIME reported a worldwide disruption on January 27, 2015, and said both services were restored after about 45 minutes. Facebook’s explanation, quoted by TIME from a company spokeswoman speaking to The Wall Street Journal, was that the outage followed “a change that affected our configuration systems.” The spokeswoman also said the company moved quickly to fix the problem and that both services were back to normal.
That is the company’s attributed explanation, not a detailed technical postmortem: the report does not identify the specific configuration change or explain precisely how it disrupted the services.
Was Facebook hacked?
Facebook denied that a third-party attack caused the outage. TIME also reported that Lizard Squad appeared to claim responsibility. These are competing statements, not proof that the group caused the disruption: the report did not independently verify Lizard Squad’s claim.

The available account therefore supports a careful answer: Facebook said the cause was an internal configuration change, and denied a third-party attack. It does not establish that Facebook or Instagram was hacked in this incident.
What is known—and not known—about the cause?
- Known: Facebook attributed the disruption to a change affecting its configuration systems and said both services were restored.
- Not established: The report does not provide a technical postmortem, name the spokeswoman, or independently confirm the apparent Lizard Squad claim.
Do not confuse this event with Meta’s separate outage on October 4, 2021. Meta’s engineering accounts for that later incident described a faulty configuration change on backbone routers, secondary DNS reachability effects, and a maintenance command that unintentionally disconnected backbone links. Meta characterized the event as an error, not malicious activity. Those details explain the 2021 outage; they do not establish the technical cause or data impact of the 2015 incident.
