A Facebook ad is not proof that the seller is legitimate. Scammers can use ads to impersonate real businesses, advertise implausibly low prices, and send shoppers to fake websites built to steal money or personal information. Check the seller independently before paying; if you already entered card details, contact your card issuer promptly.
How a Facebook ad can lead to a fake shopping site
Scammers may copy a real company’s name or images and promote steep discounts in social-media ads. The ad can lead to a lookalike store that takes payment or card details. A shopper might receive nothing, a counterfeit, or an item materially different from what the ad showed. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that social platforms do not always thoroughly vet ads or advertisers; an ad’s placement does not mean the platform has verified or endorsed the seller. FTC guidance on social-media ads and its alert about unusually cheap brand-name goods explain the pattern.
The scale is significant, though reported figures are not a count of every incident. In a 2026 analysis of reports about 2025, the FTC said people reported $2.1 billion in losses to scams that started on social media. More than 40% of people who reported losing money to a social-media scam said it began with an order after seeing an ad. That percentage is among people who reported losing money to such scams—not all ad viewers or Facebook users. Shopping scams were the most reported social-media scam category; most shopping-scam victims said their goods never arrived, while others reported counterfeits or goods unlike the ad. Leave the ad and investigate the seller on your own. These checks help you judge the offer without relying on the site’s appearance or the ad’s placement.

- Search outside Facebook. Search the seller’s name with “scam,” “complaint,” or “review.” Look for independent reports and a verifiable business identity, not just testimonials on the store’s own site.
- Compare the price. Check the brand’s official site and established retailers. A price far below the usual price for a well-known product is a warning sign, not proof of a bargain.
- Read the terms before checkout. Look for clear contact information, shipping costs and times, return and refund rules, warranty details, and who pays return shipping. Missing or confusing information is a reason to stop.
- Reach the company another way. If the ad claims to represent a known brand, use a web address or contact method you already know is genuine rather than the ad link.
The FTC’s online shopping guidance recommends checking seller information and understanding the terms before ordering.
Choose a payment method with recourse
For an unfamiliar online seller, use a credit card when possible. If an order does not arrive or is not as promised, you may be able to dispute the charge with the card issuer; a dispute does not guarantee that you will get your money back. Issuer procedures and time limits vary, so contact the issuer promptly if there is a problem.

Do not proceed if a seller insists on gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or a payment app in a way that removes ordinary purchase protections. These demands are strong scam signals. The FTC’s online shopping guidance discusses safer payment choices and steps to take when an order goes wrong.

What to do if you entered card details
- Contact the card issuer promptly. Use the number printed on the card or the issuer’s official app or website—not a link or phone number supplied by the suspicious store. Explain that you entered the details on a site you suspect is fraudulent. Ask whether to lock or replace the card and review recent transactions.
- Check and dispute charges. Look for transactions you do not recognize. Tell the issuer about unauthorized charges and any purchase that did not arrive or was not as promised. The issuer can explain the available dispute process; the outcome is not guaranteed.
- Save the evidence. Keep the ad, website address, screenshots of the store and checkout, order confirmation, receipts, messages, relevant statements, and correspondence with the issuer. The FTC recommends keeping company and transaction records when resolving a purchase problem. FTC steps for people who were scammed
- Report the incident. Report the ad or loss to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. A report helps authorities track fraud; it does not automatically remove an ad or return your money.
- Act if you shared more than payment details. If you also disclosed your Social Security number or other identity information, use IdentityTheft.gov for identity-theft guidance.
Be wary of anyone who later promises to recover lost money for an upfront fee. Verify any service independently before paying; a promise of recovery is not proof that the person can get your money back.
