Peter Molyneux says the first proper trailer for Playground Games’ Fable reboot made him worry that it looked “a little too fairytale-ish.” Later gameplay footage changed his impression: he says he is encouraged by what the team is preserving and is eager to play the game. His remarks come from a PCGamesN interview as reported by GamesRadar+, not from a direct transcript available here.
What changed Molyneux’s impression?
The contrast is between the reboot’s 2023 reveal trailer and gameplay footage shown later. Molyneux reportedly said the trailer, shown at the 2023 Xbox Games Showcase and starring Richard Ayoade, left him “a little bit worried about it, it seemed a little too fairytale-ish.” That was a concern about the tone suggested by the trailer, not a rejection of the reboot.

After seeing later gameplay, Molyneux said he was “very encouraged.” He added: “They’re keeping a lot of what made Fable different and special.” Those quotations are reported by GamesRadar+ from its PCGamesN interview with Molyneux.
What is he still curious about?
Molyneux said he is still interested in the reboot’s alignment system and how a character’s alignment will affect the world visually. He reportedly said: “Still curious about the alignment system, and how that visually affects the world, but I’m going to be first in the line to play it; I can assure you of that.” His enthusiasm is therefore paired with an open question about how a familiar Fable feature will work in this version.

Why does he say he can’t wait to play?
Molyneux described his anticipation as a chance to experience this Fable more as a player than as a creator. “In one way, this version of Fable will be the first Fable I’ve really played as a gamer,” he said, according to GamesRadar+. He followed that with: “And that’s going to be absolutely fascinating to play. I can’t wait.”
He also said it made him proud that a game he loved being involved with was continuing, and that he had enjoyed watching the team’s evolution. Molyneux is the original Fable creator, former Lionhead Studios founder and CEO, and current 22Cans founder and creative director. He is not identified as a member of Playground Games’ development team; these comments describe his reaction to footage and his plans to play the finished game, not an endorsement based on having played it.

Who is making the reboot, and when is it due?
Playground Games is developing Fable, with Xbox Game Studios as publisher. The official Xbox US listing gives 23 February 2027 as the release date and says the game will be available day one with Game Pass. The listing names Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11 and also presents options for Xbox PC, supported handhelds, and Xbox cloud gaming. These are details on the US listing and may vary by region or change before release.
