An external hard drive is a storage device that sits outside your computer and connects through a cable, most often USB, to add capacity, hold backup copies, or carry files between machines. In strict technical terms, “hard drive” means a hard disk drive (HDD), which stores data magnetically on spinning platters. Portable solid-state drives (SSDs) are also sold as external drives, but they store data in flash memory instead.
What the term covers
Dell describes external hard drives as useful for raw storage, for backups, and for moving files between computers. It notes that most use a USB cable and that available capacities and connection types vary by product. Lenovo defines the device in much the same way: a drive connected by cable to add capacity and to store or back up files.
The key point is that an external drive is separate from the computer’s internal storage. Because it is a separate device, it can be disconnected, stored elsewhere, or attached to a different compatible computer.

The phrase “external hard drive” is often used loosely for any external storage device. The two main technologies behind these products are different, and it helps to name the one you mean:
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- External HDD: a product based on spinning magnetic disks, with moving read/write heads and other mechanical components.
- External SSD: a product based on flash memory (NAND) with no moving parts.
- External drive or external storage: a general umbrella term that can cover either technology.
Seagate draws this line directly in its product FAQ: its portable SSD uses flash memory, while an external hard drive uses spinning disks.
| Attribute | External HDD | External SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Storage medium | Magnetic spinning platters | NAND flash memory |
| Moving parts | Yes (spinning platters and heads) | No |
| Speed described by sources | Slower than SSDs, per Microsoft and Seagate descriptions of the two technologies | Faster than HDDs, per Microsoft and Seagate descriptions; real-world speed still depends on the interface |
Connections and interfaces
USB is the most common connection. Dell lists USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 among the common connection types in its explainer. Other current products may use newer USB generations or Thunderbolt.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
A connector’s physical shape does not establish the data rate it supports. A port that fits the plug may still run at a lower interface generation, so check the specifications of both the drive and the host computer before expecting a particular speed.

Power: bus-powered or plugged in
Portable external HDDs are generally compact and can draw their power through the USB data connection. Larger desktop external HDDs commonly use a separate AC power source. Western Digital describes this split, and Seagate’s documentation for its portable drive family confirms USB bus power for that family.

These are configurations of specific product lines rather than rules for every model. Confirm the power requirement in the documentation for the exact drive before assuming that a laptop port alone can run it.
Speed: what the advertised number does and does not promise
An advertised peak transfer rate is not a guaranteed copy speed. Seagate explains that performance depends on the storage technology and the interface, and that the source drive can also limit a file transfer. The host port, the type of workload, and the file system can all affect real results.

This guide does not quote throughput figures, because measured speeds vary with hardware and workload and none of the sources reviewed publishes a figure that applies generally.

What external drives are used for
- Adding storage: extra capacity for files that do not fit on the internal drive.
- Backup copies: a second copy of files kept on a separate device.
- Moving files: carrying data between compatible computers.
A backup on an external drive is still a single copy on a single device. It helps against accidental deletion and a failed internal disk, but it is not a complete backup strategy on its own. Neither Dell nor Lenovo quantifies how often these drives fail, so treat any one drive as one layer of protection rather than a guarantee.

Choosing an external drive
Use the following checks to match a drive to your situation.
| Factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Technology and workload | HDD or SSD | HDDs use moving magnetic parts; SSDs use flash and are described as faster. |
| Capacity | Enough space for current files plus room to grow | Capacities vary by product, so compare the listed options. |
| Portability and power | Bus-powered portable unit or a desktop unit with its own AC adapter | Determines whether the computer’s port can supply enough power. |
| Connection | A compatible port on the host, and the drive’s interface generation | The interface sets the upper limit on potential performance. |
Formatting and file systems
Some drives need to be formatted before first use. The file system you choose determines which operating systems can read and write the drive, and file systems are not universally interchangeable across operating systems. Lenovo discusses file-system choice and advises backing up existing data before formatting, because formatting can erase the contents of the drive.
If the drive already holds files you need, copy them elsewhere first and verify the copy before you format anything.
