A floor plan can look right on screen and still arrive unusable: dimensions may be interpreted in the wrong units, the drawing may sit at the wrong origin, or room outlines may not remain editable boundaries. Treat a DXF handoff as structured drawing data—not a guarantee that every feature of the source model will survive. Agree on units, coordinates, layers, boundary geometry, and linked-file handling, then inspect the exported file in the recipient’s CAD application.
Agree on the handoff before exporting
Ask the receiving team which DXF version, units, coordinate basis, layer naming convention, and content it expects. Clarify whether it needs usable room or area boundaries, room attributes, and linked files. These choices determine how the export should be configured; defaults may not match the recipient’s workflow.
- Units: Confirm the intended drawing unit instead of assuming the receiving application will infer it correctly.
- Coordinates: Decide whether the drawing should use the project’s internal position or align to shared coordinates.
- Layers: Agree on a layer standard or custom mapping before delivery.
- Content: Identify the views and annotations needed, plus whether linked models should remain external references or be combined.
Set units and coordinate basis in Revit
Revit’s DWG/DXF export setup lets you choose a default drawing unit. The Revit 2022 help documentation says inches are the default for imperial projects and millimeters for metric projects; treat those as defaults, not as confirmation of what a recipient expects. Choose and communicate the unit for the handoff. See Autodesk’s Units and Coordinates for DWG/DXF Exports.

Choose internal coordinates when the drawing is a standalone plan and its position relative to other project files does not matter. Choose shared coordinates when it must align with other files in the project’s shared position. Autodesk specifies that, for shared coordinates in a DWG export, you must select views rather than sheets. Confirm the required export selection and coordinate basis before sending the file.

Map model categories to agreed layers
Revit can map categories and subcategories to exported layer names and colors. Autodesk’s interoperability guide lists AIA, BS1192, ISO 13567, and CP 83 standards, and also supports custom standards. The right choice is the one compatible with the recipient’s CAD standards—not simply the first available option. Ask which convention to use and inspect representative layer names and visibility after export.
Keep room boundaries and attributes usable
If the recipient needs to select or calculate from room outlines, configure room or area boundaries to export as closed polylines. Revit can also attach XDATA to room boundaries for Name, Number, Occupancy, Occupant, Department, and Comments. These are drawing-level data, not a guarantee that the full source-model intelligence travels with the file.

Room boundaries are on a layer that is off by default. After exporting, check that the layer is visible, the polylines are closed, and the expected attributes are present in the receiving application. Autodesk documents these export controls in General Options for DWG/DXF Export.

Decide how links and other content should travel
Export options affect coincident lines, selected reference content, and whether linked files are exported as external references or combined into one file. Choose based on how the recipient will work with the drawing: separate references can preserve a multi-file workflow, while a combined deliverable avoids requiring those separate files. Make sure any external references needed for the handoff are included and their locations are clear.

For a multi-platform workflow, Autodesk’s CAD and BIM Interoperability Guide advises using AutoCAD external-reference (xref) functionality rather than drafting directly in DWG or DXF files exported from Revit. Apply that guidance when the recipient’s workflow involves working from exported views alongside other files.
What DXF can preserve—and what it does not promise
DXF is more than a flattened picture: Autodesk’s DXF Reference documents structures including headers, tables, blocks, entities, objects, extended data, and coordinate-system topics. Those structures can carry meaningful drawing information, such as layers and geometry.

That does not make DXF a standard full-BIM exchange format. The Library of Congress describes DXF as a structured format, while noting version and conversion interoperability concerns. Its DXF (AutoCAD Drawing Interchange Format) Family, ASCII variant assessment says it found no evidence that BIM data can be incorporated in DXF in a standard way. Do not assume that a DXF export preserves the complete BIM model or all object intelligence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsExport and verify the file in the recipient’s application
- Confirm the contract: Get the recipient’s required DXF version, units, coordinate basis, layer standard, views, boundary needs, and link handling.
- Configure the export: Set units and coordinates intentionally. For shared coordinates in a DWG export, select views rather than sheets as Autodesk specifies.
- Choose content and options: Select the views or sheets needed, review category-to-layer mapping, visibility, room or area boundary settings, coincident-line handling, and external-reference behavior.
- Open the delivered file in the target CAD environment: Check representative dimensions, alignment, layer names and visibility, room-boundary closure and attributes, annotations, and linked dependencies.
- Keep delivery context: Retain the source model and record the software version and export choices so recipients can distinguish an export limitation from a drawing defect.
DXF’s structures and conversion history make recipient-side checking an important part of the exchange, not an optional visual polish step.
