Two contemporaneous reports on 2 October 2026 described explosions at or near Taftanaz Airport in Syria’s Idlib province, but they gave different counts and neither established what caused them. Al Jazeera reported two large explosions; ANHA, citing correspondents and local sources, described one blast followed by two more.
What was reported near Taftanaz Airport?
Al Jazeera’s NewsFeed item, published on 2 October 2026, reported two large explosions near what it called Taftanaz military airport and said smoke rose into the sky. ANHA’s report that day, citing its correspondents and local sources, described an explosion followed shortly by two more, with smoke and dust rising from inside and around the airport.
The reports therefore differ on the number of blasts. They do not establish a definitive total. Both mentioned aircraft in the area: Al Jazeera said witnesses described reconnaissance aircraft circling afterward, while ANHA reported aircraft flying over the area but said their identity was unclear. The aircraft’s identity is not independently established by these accounts.
What caused the explosions?
The cause and responsibility were unconfirmed in both reports. Al Jazeera said the cause remained unknown. ANHA relayed preliminary possibilities from local sources—detonation of remnants of war or a possible attack—but said neither could be independently verified. Those possibilities should not be treated as confirmed explanations or as an exhaustive list.

Were there casualties or damage?
ANHA said there was no confirmed information about human or material losses. That means its report did not confirm casualty or damage figures; it does not establish that no one was hurt or that no damage occurred.
Had authorities commented?
At the time of publication on 2 October, Al Jazeera reported that the military had not commented. ANHA said Syrian government authorities had not issued information or an official statement clarifying the explosions’ source or nature. These statements describe the reporting at publication time and do not establish whether authorities commented later.
