The ExoM is a passive, full-body armored exoskeleton designed to shift some of a soldier’s equipment and armor load from the shoulders toward the ground. Mehler Protection says its armor configuration provides protection up to VPAM 8; that is a specific rating, not a claim that the wearer is safe from every bullet or hit.
What is the ExoM?
ExoM is a specialized, up-armored exoskeleton developed by German armor maker Mehler Protection, Canadian biomechanics company Mawashi Science & Technology, and France’s GIGN tactical police unit, according to Mehler Protection. It is intended for military and tactical law-enforcement personnel who need to carry heavy equipment while wearing substantial ballistic protection.
Unlike a powered exoskeleton, ExoM does not use actuators or require an external power source, battery, or charging. Mehler’s 2024 product flyer describes it as operating without external power.

The concept is structural rather than motorized: a frame helps route part of the carried load away from the wearer’s shoulders and down through the structure to the boot soles and ground. The product description identifies a titanium frame, flexible spine, sliding waist belt, and articulated hip, knee, and ankle joints.

Mehler’s 2024 flyer claims up to 70% load reduction or redistribution from the shoulders to the ground, and up to 99% ease and range of motion. These are manufacturer claims; the reviewed material does not provide an independent test report explaining the measurement method or conditions. The figures should not be read as a guarantee for every user, task, or load.
Does ExoM stop AK-47 rounds?
The published protection claim is “up to VPAM 8.” New Atlas reports that VPAM 8 corresponds to protection against three 7.62×39 mm rounds fired from approximately 10 metres (33 feet): New Atlas’s 2024 report. The ammunition description is commonly associated with AK-pattern rifles, but the rating does not mean ExoM makes its wearer universally bulletproof.

Ballistic protection applies to a particular armor configuration and defined test threats. The cited sources do not establish that every part of the body is covered equally, or that the system stops every rifle round, ammunition type, impact angle, distance, or hit location. Gaps and the placement of protective components matter.

Why choose a passive exoskeleton?
Not needing batteries or charging reduces one logistical requirement during long missions or operations in remote areas—a benefit Mehler highlights in its flyer. But passive operation alone does not establish that the system is comfortable, light, easy to maintain, or reliable in the field. The cited material does not publish the total weight, thermal burden, maintenance requirements, or independent field-trial results needed to judge those trade-offs.
