Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden says a friend working at Nintendo texted him “You bastards” after Sony showed the first PlayStation Portable (PSP). Layden could not pin down the year, recalling it as “2003, ’04, ’05, something like that.” The anecdote is about a private message from an unnamed friend—not an official response from Nintendo.

What did the Nintendo employee say about the PSP?

Layden recounted that his Nintendo-employed friend sent him a text reading “You bastards.” He replied, “Hey, bro, you know, it’s all fun and games.” GamesRadar+ reported the exchange from Layden’s interview with The Expansion Pass.

The friend is not named in the report, and Layden does not describe the person’s job. The message captures one person’s reaction as Layden remembered it; it should not be read as a statement on behalf of Nintendo.

When did Sony show the first PSP?

Layden did not give a definitive year. He said he remembered Sony showing the first PSP “back in – what was that? 2003, ’04, ’05, something like that.” The reliable chronology is therefore relative: the text came after the first PSP was shown, but Layden’s recollection places the event only approximately around 2003–05.

Why did Sony’s handheld matter to Nintendo?

Sony was entering a market in which Nintendo already had a long-running presence through the Game Boy line, including the Game Boy Advance. The PSP brought PlayStation’s portable offering into direct competition with Nintendo’s DS, which took a different approach with two screens and a touch interface.

GamesRadar+ reports lifetime sales of more than 154 million Nintendo DS units and 76 million PSP units. Those are the publication’s reported figures, not a breakdown of why either system succeeded. The contrast helps explain why Sony’s arrival could feel significant to someone inside Nintendo, but it cannot tell us more about the unnamed friend’s view than the text Layden recalled.

What else did Layden say about the PSP?

Layden also reflected on the PSP’s software environment and the way players used it. These are his retrospective observations, not proof that any single factor explains the system’s performance.

Piracy and jailbreaking

Layden said the PSP “did reasonably well,” but that its operating system was hacked and “you could jailbreak it pretty easily.” He described piracy as a challenge for the platform; the interview coverage does not quantify its effect on sales or software revenue.

Monster Hunter and cooperative play

Layden pointed to Monster Hunter’s cooperative play as a driver of social adoption in Japan. That is his account of how the game helped people play together, rather than a measured claim that it alone drove PSP adoption.

What the anecdote does—and does not—establish

  • Established by Layden’s account: an unnamed friend who worked at Nintendo texted him “You bastards” after Sony showed the PSP.
  • Uncertain: the precise year; Layden himself offered a loose range of 2003–05.
  • Not established: the friend’s identity, role, or whether the message reflected Nintendo’s institutional view.
