Police in Bhopal alleged that caretaker Varun Kumar disconnected a gas-cylinder pipe and placed it near a hot iron after retired IAS officer Rakesh Agarwal was killed at his home. The allegation was reported by the Press Trust of India on October 1, 2026. The latest located update, from The Times of India on October 3, said Kumar was still missing and police were pursuing leads. These are investigative claims, not a court finding.
What police allege about the gas pipe
In its October 1 report, the Press Trust of India said investigators alleged that Kumar disconnected the gas-cylinder pipe and placed it near a hot iron before leaving the house. An earlier police account reported by Hindustan Times said the pipe was disconnected and gas had filled the premises. The reporting does not establish that a fire occurred or that the alleged act was intended to destroy evidence; it should not be presented as a proven arson attempt.
Who was killed, and where?
Rakesh Agarwal, 70, was a retired IAS officer and former Madhya Pradesh cadre officer. PTI described him as a 1982-batch officer who had served as a district collector and principal secretary. Contemporaneous reports said he was killed at his Suraj Nagar residence in Bhopal, within Ratibad police station limits, in the early hours of September 30, 2026.
Who is the caretaker sought by police?
Police named Varun Kumar, a recently hired caretaker, as the prime suspect. On September 30, Hindustan Times quoted Bhopal Additional Commissioner of Police Shailendra Chauhan saying Kumar had been hired on September 28 through a Punjab-based placement agency and was missing after the incident. Chauhan also said Kumar’s belongings were not found in the house. This was a contemporaneous police statement, not a judicial finding.

Has the suspect been found?
No arrest was reported in the latest located update. The Times of India reported on October 3 that police were following leads around the Agra–Mathura route and examining railway-station footage. It also said Agarwal had been cremated on Friday, October 2. The report described the search as ongoing at publication.
What is known about the motive?
The reports cited here do not establish a motive. Theft or robbery appeared in early coverage as a line of inquiry, not a settled explanation. Reporting also said investigators were tracing movements through CCTV and brief phone signals, and that Kumar allegedly fled with Agarwal’s phone. Those details remain part of the reported investigation; they do not by themselves establish why the killing happened.

What remains unconfirmed
The available reports describe police and investigative accounts. Accordingly, Kumar should be described as a suspect sought by police, and the alleged attempted ignition should remain attributed to investigators.
