China’s 1MW charging claim is not twice EVgo’s planned 750kW peak. It is about 1.33 times higher on paper. BYD says compatible vehicles can add up to 400km of range in five minutes on its Super e-Platform, while EVgo says its future US architecture could enable around 10-minute charging for the fastest-charging vehicles. Both figures are conditional: the vehicle, battery, temperature, state of charge and charger settings determine the result.
What EVgo announced for 2027
In its September 29, 2026 announcement, EVgo previewed a next-generation US charging architecture rated at up to 750kW. The company expects to reveal the final design and begin deployment in 2027; this is an announced future architecture, not a nationwide service available today.
EVgo estimates that the fastest-charging vehicles on the US market could reach a useful charge in around 10 minutes. That is a company estimate for qualifying vehicles, not a promise that every EV will charge that quickly.

NACS and dynamic power sharing
Every station in the announced architecture will use NACS connectors. EVgo also says dynamic power sharing will automatically adjust each dispenser’s output to the vehicle’s needs. Drivers should not have to select a stall advertised for one fixed power level, but a NACS plug alone does not make an EV capable of accepting 750kW.

- Vast Network: Wherever you go, ChargePoint’s network includes 274k+ stations across North America and Europe and 565k+ roaming partner stations.
- Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
- Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.
EVgo said it had more than 1,200 fast-charging locations across 47 US states in 2026. That existing network should not be confused with the 750kW rollout, whose locations and final specifications have not yet been announced.
What BYD’s 1MW Super e-Platform claims
BYD announced its Super e-Platform on March 17, 2025. The company describes a mass-produced 1,000kW (1MW) system built around 1,000 volts and 1,000 amps. For compatible Super e-Platform vehicles and the specified equipment, BYD claims up to 400km of added range in five minutes.
BYD also describes a liquid-cooled terminal capable of up to 1,360kW. That terminal-output figure is higher than the platform’s stated 1MW mass-produced charging power, so it should not be treated as the normal power every vehicle or station will deliver.

The company planned more than 4,000 Megawatt Flash Charging stations in China. That is a rollout target, not evidence that every Chinese public charger is megawatt-class.
Is China’s charger really twice as fast?
No. Comparing the headline peaks gives 1,000kW divided by 750kW, or approximately 1.33 times EVgo’s announced maximum. “Twice as fast” would require 1,500kW under the same conditions.
Peak electrical power also is not the same as miles or kilometres added per minute. A vehicle may accept its maximum power only briefly before its charging curve tapers. Battery size, thermal management, battery state of charge, ambient temperature and the vehicle’s own acceptance limit all affect the delivered result.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
- HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? You can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
- CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

What determines your actual charging time
Vehicle acceptance rate
The charger can offer only what the vehicle requests and its battery system can safely accept. An EV rated for substantially less than 750kW or 1MW will charge below the station’s peak.

Maximum power is generally a peak, not a constant rate from empty to full. Power typically changes as the battery fills, and the starting state of charge influences how long the high-power portion lasts.
Temperature and battery conditioning
Battery temperature affects charging performance. Cold or overheated packs may limit power, and the vehicle’s thermal-management strategy can make two sessions at the same charger produce different times.

Range is not a universal unit of speed
“400km in five minutes” depends on the compatible vehicle’s efficiency and battery configuration. Another vehicle could receive a different distance from the same energy delivered in the same time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can your EV use a megawatt charger?
Only if the vehicle is engineered and approved for the station’s connector, communication protocol, voltage and current range, and charging power. BYD’s five-minute claim is specifically for compatible Super e-Platform vehicles. EVgo’s NACS connector improves physical compatibility for vehicles using that standard, but it does not upgrade an EV’s battery, cooling system or charging electronics.
Before planning around either headline, check the vehicle maker’s maximum DC charging rate and the station operator’s compatibility information. A high-rated station does not force that power into an incompatible vehicle; the vehicle’s limits govern the session.

Why rollout scale and the electrical grid matter
Megawatt-class equipment requires a site connection capable of supplying very high power, along with cooling, protection equipment and a layout that can manage simultaneous charging. Neither announcement provides a standardized per-site grid specification, so the station rating alone cannot predict where construction will be practical or how many vehicles can charge at peak power at once.
EVgo’s 2027 date describes the start of deployment, not completion of a national network. BYD’s more-than-4,000 figure is a Chinese rollout plan. Comparing those numbers directly would mix a future US architecture with a planned station count in another market.
What drivers should expect
- EVgo’s 750kW stations are a future US option expected to begin deployment in 2027, with final design details still pending.
- BYD’s 1MW system has the higher headline peak, but its five-minute result requires a compatible vehicle and specified charging equipment.
- NACS identifies the connector standard; it does not guarantee 750kW charging.
- Use your vehicle’s published charging limit, battery-conditioning guidance and the charger’s live status to estimate a real stop time.
EVgo CEO Badar Khan described the 750kW investment as a way to “future-proof” the network for current and future vehicles. BYD founder Wang Chuanfu has similarly framed megawatt charging as an attempt to approach the refueling time of gasoline vehicles. Those goals point to the same industry direction, but the stopwatch result remains vehicle-specific.
