Apple TV’s upcoming crime thriller Nocturne puts a homicide investigation, a serial killer and a missing-person search at the center of its story. The series is based on Lars Kepler’s crime novel The Sandman and is scheduled to premiere October 30, 2026.
What is Nocturne about?
Nocturne is a 10-episode crime drama from Apple TV, adapted from Lars Kepler’s novel The Sandman. Jonah Lynn, played by Liev Schreiber, is an ex-soldier turned homicide detective who moves from Philadelphia to a small town in western Pennsylvania. There, serial killer Jurek Walter, played by Stephen Graham, threatens Jonah’s town and family.
Jonah’s surrogate daughter, FBI agent Saga Bauer (Zazie Beetz), joins the search for Walter’s last missing victim. The announced cast also includes Bill Camp, Rory Culkin, Chrissy Metz, Poorna Jagannathan and Gary Carr. Apple’s description establishes the investigation and relationships at the heart of the series; it does not specify a particular “murder board” scene.

How does the series relate to The Sandman?
Nocturne is the television adaptation of Lars Kepler’s crime novel The Sandman, not a separate story merely sharing its title. Readers who prefer the original novel can look for it by author, since other works also use the title The Sandman. The show and book are different formats; Apple’s series description identifies the novel as its source material but does not establish that every detail or the full scope of the book appears on screen.
Apple reported in July 2026 that Lars Kepler’s ten published crime novels had sold 20 million copies globally, been translated into 40 languages and distributed in more than 170 territories. Those publisher-reported figures apply to the authors’ crime novels collectively, not to Nocturne.
