Eventbrite’s listed U.S. fees are higher per paid ticket than the card-processing rate you would pay on a WordPress checkout powered by Stripe. But that comparison leaves out the costs of running a WordPress site, which Eventbrite does not charge you directly. Whether your own site is cheaper depends on the plugin you choose, what you already pay for hosting, and how many tickets you sell.
What Eventbrite charges in the United States
Eventbrite’s published fee table is organized by country and currency. The U.S. figures below come from that table, which Eventbrite’s Help Centre lists at its ticketing fees article.
- Service fee: 3.7% + $1.79 per paid ticket.
- Payment processing: 2.9% of the total order. Eventbrite calculates this on the whole order, including the service fee and any tax, not on the ticket price alone.
- Who pays by default: the attendee. The organizer can choose to absorb these fees instead. A change to this setting applies to future orders only.
- Free events and free tickets: publishing is free, and free tickets carry no fees.
What Stripe charges on a WordPress checkout
Stripe’s standard rate for a successful domestic online card transaction in the U.S. is 2.9% + $0.30, according to its pricing page. This is a processor price. It does not include a ticketing platform fee, and it does not include the rest of your site’s costs. Stripe also lists additional charges for international cards and for currency conversion, which apply if your buyers pay from outside the U.S. or in another currency.

Side-by-side numbers for U.S. ticket prices
The table shows what each route costs on a single paid ticket at three face values. It assumes no sales tax, a buyer who pays Eventbrite’s fees on top of the ticket price, and a Stripe charge equal to the face value on your own site with no fee pass-through. Those assumptions are where the two routes differ most, so read the table with them in mind.

| Face price | Eventbrite service fee | Eventbrite processing (2.9% of order) | Eventbrite total fees per ticket | Stripe processing on the same face price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $25 | $2.72 | $0.80 | $3.52 | $1.03 |
| $50 | $3.64 | $1.56 | $5.20 | $1.75 |
| $100 | $5.49 | $3.06 | $8.55 | $3.20 |
Eventbrite figures are calculated from the published 3.7% + $1.79 service fee and 2.9% processing rate, with processing applied to the face price plus the service fee. Stripe figures apply 2.9% + $0.30 to the face price only. Both are arithmetic from the published rates, rounded to the cent, and they are not measured costs from a live event.
If you let the buyer pay the Stripe fee too, the charge becomes the ticket price plus that fee, so the processing cost rises slightly. For a $50 ticket where the buyer covers the Stripe fee, the charge is about $53.64 and the processing cost is about $1.86. The fee is then recovered from the buyer rather than from your revenue.

The costs a WordPress site adds
A processor rate is only one line in the cost of selling tickets on your own site. The following costs are not included in the table above.

The free Event Tickets listing on WordPress.org documents a free plugin with payment integrations. Paid features sit in Event Tickets Plus, which WooCommerce sells through its Event Tickets product page. That page describes WooCommerce integration and ticket types with their own price, stock, SKU, and sale windows. The sources I checked do not state the license price, so confirm it on the product page before budgeting.

Application fees and waivers
The Event Tickets changelog says a 2% Tickets Commerce application fee is waived after a valid Event Tickets Plus license is activated with Stripe or Square. This is specific to that plugin’s checkout, not a general WordPress rule. Verify that it still applies before counting it in your costs, and read the license terms, since waivers can depend on the license state.
Other plugins
Events Manager states on its payments documentation page that payments can go directly to a connected processor and that it charges no per-ticket commission. The same page says normal processor fees still apply. This is the vendor’s own claim about its product. Other plugins may have different charges, so check each one’s current pricing and checkout mode.

Hosting, maintenance, and time
Hosting, backups, security updates, and the time to fix checkout problems are costs that Eventbrite absorbs for you. None of these appear in the published fee tables, so you need to estimate them for your own site. For a site that already runs for other reasons, the marginal cost of adding ticketing may be small. For a site built only for events, it may be most of the bill.
Eventbrite Premium is a separate decision
Eventbrite’s pricing and plans article lists an optional Premium subscription. For U.S. accounts it is shown at $69 per month or $708 per year. Premium is not a transaction fee and is not required to sell tickets. Compare it against the features you actually need, such as marketing tools, rather than adding it to the per-ticket fees above.

Who should absorb the fees
Whether the buyer or the organizer pays Eventbrite’s fees does not change the published rates. It changes who receives the cost. If you absorb the fees on Eventbrite, your net revenue per ticket falls by the full amount in the table, and the buyer’s price stays at the face value. If the buyer pays them, the attendee’s total rises. Decide before you publish the price, because the buyer-facing total is what most people compare.
When each route makes more sense
- Eventbrite tends to fit organizers who want built-in event discovery and do not have a website. Eventbrite’s marketplace can bring in buyers, but its published materials do not say how many sales a given event gets from discovery. Do not assume a dollar value for that benefit without evidence from your own events.
- A WordPress site tends to fit organizers who already run a site, want to keep checkout and customer records, and sell enough tickets that the lower processing rate and any plugin costs are less than Eventbrite’s per-ticket fees. The break-even point depends on your fixed costs, so calculate it rather than assuming it.
- Mixed setups are possible: some organizers list events on Eventbrite for discovery and sell directly from their site for repeat audiences. Track each route’s fees separately so the comparison stays honest.
How to run the comparison for your own event
- Choose one face price, one ticket count, and one order size. Use the same numbers for both routes.
- Calculate Eventbrite’s service fee as 3.7% of the face price plus $1.79 per ticket.
- Calculate Eventbrite’s processing fee as 2.9% of the order total, including the service fee and any tax.
- Calculate Stripe’s fee as 2.9% of the charge plus $0.30 per successful transaction. Add the international or currency surcharge if your buyers are outside the U.S.
- Add the plugin license, any application fee that applies, hosting, and an estimate of maintenance time for the period you are comparing.
- Divide the fixed costs by the number of tickets you expect to sell, and add that per-ticket figure to the Stripe fee to compare with Eventbrite’s total.
- Check the current pricing pages on the day you set your ticket prices, because these rates change.
The per-ticket comparison favors your own site only after the fixed costs are spread across enough tickets. A small event with few sales can easily cost more on a WordPress site than on Eventbrite, even though the processing rate is lower.
Verify before you commit
- Eventbrite’s fee table is country- and currency-specific. The U.S. figures above are the ones listed for U.S. online paid tickets.
- Stripe’s rates apply to domestic U.S. card payments. International cards, currency conversion, and other payment methods cost more.
- Plugin prices, license terms, and application fees change. Read each product page directly.
