A charter-plane hydraulic problem left the New York Yankees waiting for more than five hours, then riding a bus from Westchester County Airport to LaGuardia before flying to Tampa. The Associated Press reported that they reached Tampa International Airport at about 1 a.m. Friday, roughly ten and a half hours after arriving at Westchester on Thursday afternoon. For ordinary travelers, the useful lesson is not that you can copy the Yankees’ airport switch: it is to know what your airline has promised, understand when you can reject a changed itinerary for a refund, and keep records while a disruption unfolds.
What happened to the Yankees’ plane?
According to the Associated Press, the Yankees arrived at Westchester County Airport at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday for their charter flight to Tampa. A hydraulic issue affected the aircraft, and players spent more than five hours aboard it. Manager Aaron Boone described the problem: “Hydraulics issue. Didn’t have a tall enough ladder to fix it.” He added, “I offered to go get my ladder at home. Declined.” AP reporting republished by The Washington Post does not identify the charter operator or the specific hydraulic component, or explain in detail why the available equipment was insufficient.
The players passed the wait with cards, conversations, video games and scrolling. Gerrit Cole recalled: “Just hung out, cards, conversations,” followed by “Ribbing each other, video games, doom scrolling.”
Why did the Yankees switch airports?
The team left Westchester by bus for LaGuardia, about 30 miles (48 km) away, and departed from there at around 10 p.m. They landed at Tampa International Airport at about 1 a.m. Friday. Cole summed up the counterintuitive detour: “We drove further away from Tampa and then we worked our way closer back to Tampa, and then we flew to Tampa,” he said.

The AP account describes a team charter arrangement and a bus transfer. It does not establish that this option is available to ordinary passengers with commercial tickets; a commercial passenger should ask the operating airline what rebooking or transport it can offer rather than assume they can switch airports on their own.
How long were the Yankees delayed?
The reported timeline runs from about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, when the team arrived at Westchester, to about 1 a.m. Friday, when it reached Tampa: roughly ten and a half hours. The headline’s “10-hour” description is a rounded characterization. The AP report says the team spent more than five hours aboard the original plane, but does not provide a full breakdown of every part of the wait and journey.

Check the airline’s live updates
Before leaving for the airport and while waiting, check the airline’s app or website for status changes. Delay information can change as the airline’s operations develop.

Use the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Airline Cancellation and Delay Dashboard to check the carrier’s current customer-service commitments. DOT describes controllable disruptions as airline-caused and gives maintenance, crew, cleaning, baggage loading and fueling as examples. The dashboard records promises for controllable delays and cancellations; it is not a blanket guarantee of compensation. Large U.S. carriers’ listed commitments include rebooking on the same airline at no additional cost for significant controllable delays, but partner-airline rebooking and amenities such as meals, hotels and ground transport vary. Check the current entry for your carrier, because commitments differ.

Ask what help applies to your situation
Ask airline staff what rebooking, meals, lodging or other assistance is available. The carrier’s commitments and the circumstances matter; a delay does not automatically mean every passenger will receive cash, a hotel or a voucher. If the carrier does not honor a commitment in its customer-service plan, raise the issue with the airline first. DOT says it can hold carriers to their stated promises and provides a consumer complaint route.
Keep records as events unfold
Save your ticket or itinerary, flight number, travel date and city pair, along with airline notices, correspondence and relevant receipts. The New York Attorney General’s consumer guidance recommends keeping documentation and says consumers can complain when an airline refuses a required refund or engages in misleading practices. The office accepts complaints from New York consumers.

Can I get a refund if my flight is significantly delayed?
Under DOT guidance, if a flight is significantly changed or delayed and you decline the airline’s alternative, you may be entitled to a refund—even if the original ticket was non-refundable. If you accept the changed itinerary and travel, you generally are not entitled to a refund under DOT rules. Refund rights are separate from a carrier’s commitments to provide rebooking or other care, and a refund does not itself establish a right to additional cash compensation for inconvenience. Review the DOT’s current refund guidance and the airline’s offer before deciding.
How should I compare the airline’s options?
A useful decision depends on more than the cause of the delay. Compare the practical timing of each alternative and the airline’s stated commitments, then decide whether continuing the trip or declining the alternative for a possible refund better fits your needs.

New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a January 30, 2026, winter-weather consumer alert, “Winter storms are unpredictable, but travelers’ rights are not.” That was a statement in the context of winter-weather travel; the applicable refund rules and each carrier’s commitments depend on the circumstances.
