In May 2024, Europol said it was assessing a threat actor’s claim to have stolen data associated with its Europol Platform for Experts (EPE). The agency was reported as saying its core systems were not affected and operational data had not been compromised. Those statements did not verify what, if anything, the actor obtained, and the available reporting does not establish the investigation’s eventual outcome.
What was the alleged Europol breach?
On 13 May 2024, SecurityWeek reported that Europol was investigating a threat actor’s claim to have stolen data from the Europol Platform for Experts. The claim was an allegation, not independent confirmation that the offered material was authentic or that a particular set of records had been taken.
A contemporaneous SC Media transcript described EPE as a collaborative platform for law-enforcement professionals to share best practices and other information. It reported that the platform had been offline since 10 May 2024; that was a status report at the time, not evidence of its current availability.

SecurityWeek reported Europol’s position that no core systems were impacted and no operational data had been compromised. The agency’s spokesperson was quoted as saying it was “aware of the incident and [are] assessing the situation.” This was an initial assessment while the claim was being investigated. It does not establish that no data of any kind was accessed, nor does the actor’s claim establish that classified operational systems were breached.

Was classified data confirmed stolen or offered for sale?
The title of the contemporaneous SecurityWeek report refers to the actor’s offer to sell “classified data,” but the reporting cited here does not provide a verified inventory of the material or establish its authenticity. The SC Media transcript also discusses the SIRIUS electronic-evidence program in connection with the claims, but does not confirm that SIRIUS records were stolen. It is therefore more accurate to describe this as an investigated claim involving data allegedly associated with EPE, rather than a confirmed theft of classified operational information.

The contemporaneous reports establish that Europol was assessing the claim in May 2024 and had reported no impact to core systems or operational data. The available sources do not establish a final investigation finding or later confirmed status. Europol’s initial response should not be presented as a final determination, and the incident should not be described as a newly confirmed 2026 breach. The SecurityWeek Europol archive confirms the story as 2024 coverage but does not document the investigation’s eventual outcome.
