European benchmark diesel futures fell nearly 6% on the morning of October 2, 2026, as governments discussed emergency fuel-stock releases. The 50-million-barrel diesel figure in early reports was a French proposal—not the final G7 allocation. Later that day, G7 leaders announced a coordinated plan to release 100 million barrels of oil and fuel products, with a substantial diesel release due first.
How far did European diesel prices fall?
Investing.com reported that the benchmark European diesel futures contract fell more than 5% Friday morning, reaching $1,364 per tonne—about $185 per barrel—and described the decline as nearly 6%. The report did not identify the contract month or exchange, so the figure should not be read as a price for a more specifically identified contract. Investing.com
This was a futures-market move, not evidence that diesel immediately became cheaper at petrol stations across Europe. A separate retail figure reported by Le Monde put the average European diesel price at €2.24 per litre in recent days; it is not directly comparable with the futures benchmark because it measures a different market and uses a different unit. Why did futures fall?
The decline coincided with discussions about releasing emergency stocks, which can ease expectations of near-term supply shortages. The timing does not establish that the proposal alone caused the price move: the cited market report provides no isolated estimate of the effect of the stock-release discussion.

Supply conditions were also tight. The International Energy Agency said refined-product flows remained constrained despite a significant recovery in crude-oil exports from the Middle East, and that Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries were worsening diesel tightness. Its account of the October 2 G7 meeting also noted that around 325 million barrels of the 400 million barrels pledged in an earlier collective action had been released. What was proposed, and what did the G7 announce?
The figures changed as discussions progressed. Reuters described a French proposal under discussion by EU governments before the leaders’ meeting; the later G7 announcement was a broader plan. The available reporting does not establish the final split between crude oil and diesel within the 100-million-barrel total.

Who coordinates Europe’s emergency stocks?
The European Commission said in its October 2 press briefing that it coordinates Member State positions if an International Energy Agency stock-release decision is taken. That describes a coordinating role; it does not mean the Commission unilaterally controls national reserves. The IEA said its executive director attended the G7 leaders’ meeting and that leaders asked the agency to take forward work on the options discussed. What the announcement does—and does not—mean for drivers
An emergency release can affect wholesale expectations before the fuel is physically available. The IEA’s report of constrained refined-product flows and its tally of earlier barrels released illustrate why an announcement should not be confused with proof that every planned barrel has been delivered.
For drivers, the futures decline is not a forecast of an equal or immediate fall in pump prices. The retail price cited by Le Monde is a separate measure, and the sources reviewed do not specify the final national contributions, the definitive product split in the G7 plan, or how much of that plan had physically been delivered after the announcement.
