EU ambassador to Australia Lawrence Meredith has warned that Australia could be $10 billion a year worse off if Parliament does not ratify the Australia–EU free trade agreement. That figure is Meredith’s warning as reported in secondary coverage—not an independently verified forecast of losses.
What the warning means—and what it does not
Meredith’s argument is that failing to ratify the agreement could mean missing economic opportunities. The annual $10 billion figure is his reported estimate of the cost of non-ratification; it should not be treated as a guaranteed loss or a settled economic calculation. The original interview text was not available in the reporting surfaced for this account, so the warning is best understood as an attributed position.
What the Australian government says the agreement could deliver
Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell said in 2026 that the government estimated the agreement would be worth A$10 billion to Australia. That is the government’s estimate of the agreement’s value, not an estimate that Australia would lose that sum each year if the deal failed.

He called it “an enormous opportunity for Australia’s world-class producers, farmers, businesses and exporters.” The projection describes a benefit after entry into force, not a benefit already in effect.

Ratification and implementation remain central
Farrell’s August 2026 address said further steps were still required before the agreement’s benefits could be realized. The cited material therefore describes implementation as pending at that point; it does not establish the agreement’s later parliamentary or treaty status. The projected tariff access should not be read as current access until the agreement has entered into force.
Issues in the debate beyond the headline figure
Secondary coverage attributes several other positions to Meredith: opposition to delaying or reopening negotiations, claims of increased Australian access for beef and lamb, a response to concerns about climate provisions, and support for Australia–EU cooperation on AI rules. These are reported positions, not a substitute for the agreement’s full legal text. Without that text, the summaries do not establish the precise obligations or market-access terms.

- Who benefits: Economy-wide projections do not, on their own, show how gains would be distributed among exporters, sectors, workers or consumers.
- Agricultural access: The reported claims about beef and lamb need to be assessed against the agreement’s exact market-access terms.
- Implementation and climate provisions: The agreement’s entry-into-force steps and legal commitments matter to how and when any projected benefits apply.
The material cited here supports the government’s stated estimate and export-access projection, but does not provide an independent evaluation of the projected gains or a complete legal analysis of the deal.
