Etihad Airways has not been reported to have filed a lawsuit against the Premier League. Is Etihad suing the Premier League?
As of 3 October 2026, the available reporting did not establish that Etihad had started court proceedings. The airline said it would seek legal advice on “the options and recourse available to protect its interests,” a statement reproduced by The Guardian. That is a stated intention to explore options, not confirmation that a claim has been filed.
The distinction matters: reports that a company is considering legal action do not establish that it has sued, what legal argument it might make, or whether a court would accept it. The reporting available by that date did not establish Etihad’s proposed legal basis or any outcome.
Why did Etihad say it may take action?
Etihad responded after the Premier League published a redacted core decision from an independent commission on 29 September. The airline rejected any implication that it had been involved in improper commercial arrangements, said it had not been contacted or engaged during the process, and affirmed its relationship with Manchester City, according to The Guardian’s report of its statement.

Etihad’s complaint is about the implications it says the public communication of the decision has for the airline and its claimed lack of engagement. Those are the airline’s assertions, not findings by a court about fairness, liability or any right to bring a particular claim.
What did the Premier League say the commission found?
The Premier League said the commission found Manchester City guilty of all charges relating to serious financial-rule breaches over nine seasons, from 2009/10 through 2017/18, and of the majority of charges relating to non-cooperation. The league described the case as involving commercial-partner arrangements and other agreements. Its account said the commission found those schemes inflated revenue and reduced costs by more than £900 million over the period. These are the Premier League’s descriptions of the commission’s conclusions; they are not a separate finding that Etihad committed wrongdoing.

The league said the hearing lasted 42 days and concluded in December 2024. Its 29 September 2026 statement summarized a redacted core decision; the league said confidentiality rules limited what further material could be published. What is the status of Manchester City’s appeal?
Manchester City’s appeal is separate from Etihad’s possible legal options. The Associated Press reported on 2 October 2026 that City had filed a comprehensive appeal before the deadline. The club said the commission’s opinion “contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe,” as reported by AP. That is City’s position, not an appeal-board ruling.

AP reported that league regulations provide for a hearing within 12 weeks of the appeal filing. That is a reported procedural timetable, not a confirmed hearing date. As of 3 October, the appeal outcome and any sanction remained unresolved. The Premier League said sanctions would be addressed separately and that some proceedings and materials remain confidential. Its description of the process says an appeal board can allow or dismiss an appeal or make another order it considers fit; that does not establish that Etihad is a party to City’s appeal or has standing to bring a particular claim.
