As of October 3, 2026, Ethiopian federal and pro-government forces were reported to have retaken Alula Aba Nega Airport in Mekelle and to be advancing after more than a week of fighting. Accounts also described some Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) fighters or leaders leaving positions or the city. These reports do not establish that federal forces control all of Mekelle or that a TPLF withdrawal is complete.
What happened in Mekelle?
Al Jazeera reported on October 3 that federal and pro-government forces had retaken Alula Aba Nega Airport, Mekelle’s airport. Reuters, as cited by Al Jazeera, reported that a source familiar with events and a humanitarian source said the airport had been retaken; a Mekelle resident also confirmed it. A resident and a local journalist separately described TPLF fighters or leaders leaving positions or the city.
The distinction matters: reports that forces control an airport do not establish control of the city as a whole. The available accounts did not provide an independently verified, comprehensive line of control for Mekelle.

Reports described fighting across Tigray, Afar, and Amhara. The accounts include competing changes in control of towns as well as claims that have not been verified, so they should be read as dated reports rather than a settled map of the front.

Afar: Erebti and Abala
The Associated Press reported that TPLF fighters took the strategic Afar town of Erebti over the weekend before its September 28 report, citing a commander. A Tigray Peace Force official confirmed the takeover but disputed that heavy fighting occurred. The Critical Threats Project’s October 2 review said Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) and Tigray Peace Force counterattacks reportedly retook Abala and Erebti on October 1. These accounts describe a reported change in control, not an independently verified current status for either town.
The Critical Threats Project also said it could not verify a Tigray Defense Forces (TDF) claim that it had captured Mizilat. Its review described reported TDF tactical withdrawals from some positions alongside continued resistance.

Alamata and supply routes
Al Jazeera described Alamata, near Tigray’s southern border with Amhara, as a hub for supplying troops with fuel and food. The report said control of the town could help federal forces advance north toward Mekelle. It also said fighting in Afar could threaten supply routes from Djibouti, through which most Ethiopian imports, including fuel, pass. These are strategic assessments reported by Al Jazeera, not proof that a particular route has been cut or that an advance will succeed.
Who is fighting, and what led to renewed hostilities?
The main parties are Ethiopia’s federal government and military, and fighters loyal to the TPLF, an armed political organization. The Critical Threats Project identifies the TDF as the TPLF’s military wing. The Tigray Peace Force is a Tigrayan armed group aligned with federal forces, according to the reporting reviewed.

The latest fighting erupted in late September 2026 after months of worsening tensions. It renews a conflict between TPLF forces and the federal government that began in 2020 and was paused by a peace deal signed in Pretoria, South Africa, in November 2022. The Associated Press reported that political tensions continued after the agreement and that the postwar caretaker administration in Mekelle was seen as loyal to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Both sides denied responsibility for starting the new hostilities.
Opposition alliance announcement
The Associated Press reported that the TPLF and six other opposition groups announced an alliance seeking to remove Abiy’s government. The announced members were the Amhara Fano National Movement, Oromo Liberation Army, Ogaden National Liberation Front, Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front, Benishangul Peoples’ Liberation Movement, and Gumuz Peoples’ Democratic Movement, alongside the TPLF. An announced alliance does not establish that every member is fighting alongside the others on each front.

Could the fighting spread to Eritrea or involve other countries?
Ethiopian army chief Field Marshal Birhanu Jula accused Eritrea of mobilizing financial support for the TPLF and suggested Sudan and Egypt were also involved, without explaining the latter allegations, the Associated Press reported on September 28. The report included denials and counter-accusations from Eritrea and Sudan. Al Jazeera reported that Eritrea announced it would sever diplomatic ties with Ethiopia after Ethiopia’s actions.
These are accusations and official responses, not independently established evidence that Eritrea, Sudan, or Egypt is participating in the fighting. The reports show diplomatic tensions, but do not establish that the conflict has spread across an international border.

What is known about civilian harm and displacement?
Published figures describe different places, time periods, and measures; they should not be added together as if they were one comprehensive count.

Al Jazeera also reported that MSF had seen a surge in wounded people. The figures above are reports with distinct scopes, not a single independently verified total for casualties or displacement from the renewed fighting.
What remains uncertain?
As of October 3, the available reporting did not establish a complete, independently verified account of territorial control, the extent of any TPLF withdrawal, or the conflict’s likely outcome. The Critical Threats Project’s October 2 review explicitly flagged a claim it could not verify, while other reports relied in part on attributed officials, residents, journalists, or anonymous sources.
Amnesty International’s regional director for East and Southern Africa, Tigere Chagutah, said the African Union, a guarantor of the 2022 ceasefire agreement, should “urgently activate its response mechanisms and mobilize its member states before it is too late.” The statement is a call for action, not confirmation of battlefield developments.
