Prysm v7.2.1 added the Sepolia gas-limit schedule needed for validators to default to 200 million gas at the scheduled Glamsterdam test fork. The previous Prysm v7.2.0 release supported the fork but lacked that schedule, leaving its default at 60 million unless an operator configured a higher limit. The update corrected a client default; it does not establish that the Sepolia test succeeded or that Ethereum mainnet will use a 200-million gas limit.
What Prysm changed
Prysm v7.2.0 included support for the scheduled Sepolia fork, but its release notes say the gas-limit schedule was added to upstream configuration after that release was cut. As a result, validators on v7.2.0 would default to 60 million gas after the fork unless their operators set another value.
Prysm v7.2.1, dated October 5, added a Sepolia schedule that sets a 200-million gas limit from the Gloas fork. Operators can still choose a different limit in proposer settings, through the keymanager API, or with --suggested-gas-limit. See the Prysm v7.2.1 release notes for the release details.
| Prysm release | Sepolia fork support | Default gas-limit behavior |
|---|---|---|
| v7.2.0 | Supported the scheduled fork | 60 million after the fork unless the operator configured another value |
| v7.2.1 | Included the Sepolia gas-limit schedule | 200 million from the Gloas fork; operators can configure another value |
This comparison describes Prysm’s documented behavior, not the defaults or configuration of other Ethereum clients.

Why the fix mattered to the capacity test
The Sepolia test was intended to exercise a 200-million gas limit, up from the prior 60-million setting. If a validator continued proposing blocks at the lower default, those blocks would not exercise the intended higher capacity. The release therefore aligned Prysm’s Sepolia default with the test configuration; it did not force every operator to use that limit.
The Ethereum Foundation scheduled Sepolia’s Glamsterdam activation for epoch 353,024, slot 11,296,768—2026-10-06 at 13:53:36 UTC. The Foundation’s September 28 testnet announcement gave that schedule and said Hoodi and mainnet activation dates had not yet been decided.

What Glamsterdam is testing
Glamsterdam combines the Amsterdam execution-layer upgrade with the Gloas consensus-layer upgrade. The Foundation highlights enshrined proposer-builder separation (ePBS) and block-level access lists (BALs) as changes intended to support higher Layer 1 throughput while keeping block validation practical. BALs provide state-access information that clients can use to parallelize state reads and transaction validation.

The upgrade also changes gas accounting. EIP-8037 increases and separately meters state-creation costs, while EIP-8038 changes state-access costs. The Foundation describes these repricings as a way to better reflect resource use and support higher gas limits while managing state growth. The proposed capacity setting and the accounting changes are related to the upgrade’s goals, but a 200-million test setting is not itself evidence of a safe or settled mainnet limit.

What the test result does—and does not—show
The cited announcements and release notes establish the scheduled activation and Prysm’s changed default. They do not establish whether Sepolia’s post-activation test passed, how much gas blocks actually used, or whether operators broadly adopted v7.2.1. Until a source reports those outcomes, the test’s success or failure remains unresolved.
Likewise, the 200-million value is a Sepolia testnet configuration, not an announced Ethereum mainnet setting. In the September 28 announcement, the Foundation had not set Hoodi or mainnet activation dates.

What validators and developers should check
Validator operators
- Check the release notes and configuration for the specific client you run; fork support and the gas limit you intend to propose are separate settings.
- Prysm operators should review whether they are on v7.2.0 or v7.2.1 and whether an explicit proposer setting, keymanager API value, or
--suggested-gas-limitoverrides the default. - Do not assume that Prysm’s Sepolia schedule applies to other clients or to mainnet.
Smart-contract developers
The Foundation’s repricing guidance for smart-contract developers calls out patterns that may need testing under the changed rules:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Fixed gas stipends and hardcoded gas values.
- Code that branches on
gasleft(). - Presigned transactions with fixed gas limits.
The Foundation says historical transaction replay found “the large majority of transactions” had no change, and that “the large majority of smart contracts are unaffected.” Those statements are not a guarantee for an individual contract; test gas-sensitive behavior against the updated rules.

Review gas estimation and cached gas constants. The Foundation warns that older constants may underestimate gas under the new schedule, which can affect estimates and fixed-limit transactions.

The release change alone cannot answer that. It sets a default for Prysm validators on Sepolia; it is not a safety assessment, a measured outcome, or a decision to apply the same limit to mainnet. Glamsterdam’s ePBS, BALs, and gas-accounting changes are intended to support higher execution capacity while keeping validation practical, but the scheduled test and the available release documentation do not report the post-activation results needed to judge how the test performed.
