The Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is the execution environment that runs smart-contract bytecode as part of Ethereum’s transaction processing. It applies Ethereum’s execution rules, meters computation with gas, and determines resulting state changes so execution clients can reach consistent results from the same inputs.
What the Ethereum Virtual Machine does
The EVM is both a runtime for contract code and a protocol component in Ethereum’s state-transition process. It is not the Ethereum network as a whole, a standalone consumer application, or the Solidity programming language. Ethereum.org describes it as a “decentralized virtual environment that executes code consistently and securely across all Ethereum nodes” (Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)).
Smart contracts are programs whose executable form is EVM bytecode. A developer commonly writes a contract in Solidity and compiles that source code into bytecode; the EVM processes the bytecode, not the original Solidity text. Solidity’s documentation calls the EVM the runtime environment for smart contracts in Ethereum (Introduction to Smart Contracts).

- Write and compile: A developer writes a contract in a language that targets the EVM, commonly Solidity, then compiles it into EVM bytecode.
- Create or call a contract: A transaction can create a contract, installing its code, or call an existing contract. The execution environment provides the relevant transaction and blockchain context.
- Process instructions: The EVM executes bytecode instructions. They can perform arithmetic and stack operations, read transaction or block context, invoke other contracts, and access memory or storage.
- Apply the outcome: If execution completes successfully, it can produce changes to Ethereum state. If it fails exceptionally, such as by running out of gas, the current call frame halts and its modifications are reverted.
What gas limits
Gas measures the computational work required to execute EVM instructions. A transaction or call has a gas limit; if an execution frame exhausts the gas available to it, that frame stops with an exception and its state changes are reverted. Gas is not a fixed price: the fee paid depends on Ethereum’s fee rules and network conditions. The Solidity documentation explains gas and the consequences of running out during execution.

Where the EVM keeps data
The EVM uses distinct data areas for work during execution and information that persists in Ethereum state:
- Stack: The EVM is a stack machine. Ethereum.org documents a maximum stack depth of 1,024 items, with each item a 256-bit word.
- Memory: Temporary working data is available during execution but does not persist between transactions.
- Storage: Contract storage is persistent data associated with Ethereum’s global state.
- Transient storage: The TSTORE and TLOAD instructions provide transaction-scoped storage that can be used across internal calls and is cleared when the transaction ends.
These data areas and the EVM’s instruction model are described in Ethereum.org’s EVM guide. Exact opcode behavior and costs depend on the active protocol rules.

Why EVM rules and specifications matter
The EVM’s behavior is defined by Ethereum protocol rules, which evolve through upgrades. The Ethereum Yellow Paper is a formal reference for the machine and its terminology. For current instruction semantics and fork-specific rules, consult the maintained Ethereum Execution Layer Specification as well as official developer documentation. An opcode’s behavior or gas cost should not be assumed to be timeless.
What EVM-compatible means—and does not mean
An EVM-compatible chain aims to support EVM code and behavior, but compatibility alone does not make it identical to Ethereum. When evaluating a particular chain, check which protocol rules and opcodes it supports, the specification or implementation version it follows, and how its transaction, state, and fee rules work. Compatibility does not establish identical fees, security assumptions, or governance.
