ETH Zurich researchers have built a self-contained robotic hand that can crawl on its fingers, recover from some falls, press keyboard keys and push small objects. Its resemblance to Thing from The Addams Family is a visual comparison; the research project is called “Fingers as Legs,” and it is a prototype rather than a product.
What is the walking robot hand?
“Fingers as Legs: Learning Self-Supported Locomotion and Manipulation with an Anthropomorphic Hand” is a 2026 preprint from Amirhossein Kazemipour, Hehui Zheng and Robert Katzschmann of the Soft Robotics Lab at ETH Zurich. The paper is identified as arXiv:2609.17172; it is a preprint, not evidence of peer-reviewed journal publication.
The team adapted an off-the-shelf anthropomorphic robotic hand, retaining its original finger design and position controller. Its five fingers have 20 powered joints. An added compact module supplies onboard power, sensing and computation, bringing the stated total mass to 818 g, according to the ETH Zurich project page.

How does it move on its fingers?
The hand has to solve a shifting-support problem: lifting a finger to take a step or touch something also changes how much support remains beneath its body. The researchers used reinforcement learning and a simulator calibrated with hardware measurements to account for the hand’s unequal fingers. Task-specific learned policies run onboard.

Unlike a mobile robot that uses wheels or a separate set of legs, this platform reuses its own fingers for movement, support and interaction. The paper captures the challenge this way: “A walking robotic hand must use the same fingers to move its body, support its weight, and interact with the environment.”
What has the hand demonstrated?
The lab reports demonstrations across several distinct tasks. The figures below are prototype results under the stated conditions, not general benchmarks for performance in arbitrary settings.

How autonomous is it?
The demonstrations do not show one general-purpose system that sees, plans and navigates independently. Each skill uses its own policy, and crawling is under operator control rather than general autonomous navigation. The keyboard test starts from manual alignment and runs without visual feedback; the cube-pushing demonstration, by contrast, uses overhead visual feedback. Those differences matter when interpreting the results.

A compact hand that moves without a wheeled base suggests possible future uses such as reaching into confined spaces or retrieving a tool. Those are prospective applications, not capabilities demonstrated as a deployed product. The project page does not identify the manufacturer or model of the original off-the-shelf hand, and the prototype is not presented as being for sale.

How does it compare with earlier walking-hand work?
Popular Science’s October 2, 2026 coverage says earlier attempts modified hand structures by equalizing finger lengths, while this project retained unequal fingers. That is a contextual comparison reported by Popular Science, not a performance comparison between systems.
