Etched is reviewing incoming bids that value the AI inference-hardware startup at $40 billion to $50 billion, according to an October 5, 2026, TechCrunch report citing people familiar with the company. The talks are at an early stage, terms could change, and Etched declined to comment; no new financing has been announced. In August, Etched announced a $700 million funding round at a $21 billion valuation.
Is Etched raising at a $40 billion valuation?
TechCrunch reported that Etched was reviewing bids ranging from $40 billion to $50 billion. The report described bids from top-tier investors at the lower end and lesser-known backers at the higher end, but did not name any prospective investors. These are reported bids under consideration—not an agreed valuation, a completed funding round, or a company-confirmed fundraising announcement.

The process is early and its terms may change. Etched declined to comment to TechCrunch. A valuation attached to a possible transaction is also distinct from revenue, cash raised, or a public-market value.
How does that compare with Etched’s August funding?
On August 18, 2026, Etched announced that it had raised $700 million at a $21 billion valuation in a round led by Jane Street. That announced financing is the firm comparison point for the newer reported bids; it does not mean Etched has since raised money at $40 billion to $50 billion.
#1 Best Overall
- [Local AI Inference & 70B Model Ready] Equipped with the AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 8845HS processor, NEXUS is engineered for heavy local AI workloads. With a full-size GPU bay, it runs 70B LLMs natively without an internet connection. Ideal for AI developers and tech enthusiasts who need private environment for coding and model testing.
- [132TB Mass Storage with ZFS Integrity] Features a hybrid storage architecture (3×NVMe + 4×3.5" HDD) supporting up to 132TB. Utilizing the enterprise-grade ZFS file system and ECC memory, it prevents data corruption and bit rot—a must-have for professional photographers and video editors safeguarding 4K/8K RAW footage.
- [OpenClaw-Driven Automation Workflow] The built-in OpenClaw execution layer allows complex automated tasks to be processed locally. Even when offline, your backup schedules and AI file organization continue seamlessly. Say goodbye to monthly cloud subscriptions and high latency.
- [Dual 10GbE & USB4 Ultra-Connectivity] Experience server-class speeds with dual 10GbE ports and a 40Gbps USB4 interface. It enables multi-user real-time collaboration on large project files directly from the NAS, ensuring zero-lag editing for creative studios and production teams.
- [Open-Source ZimaOS for Total Privacy] Running on the fully open-source ZimaOS, NEXUS ensures your data stays physically on-premise with no backdoors. It acts as a "Digital Fortress" for privacy-conscious families and small businesses who demand absolute data sovereignty.
Etched also said Jane Street was its first customer, that it had shipped the firm its first rack, and that Jane Street was actively deploying the technology. Jane Street said it had tested the chip and was pleased with early results, and described its rack as running in its data center. These statements are attributed to the company and Jane Street, not independent assessments of broad production performance.
What does Etched make?
Etched builds rack-scale hardware systems for AI inference: the computation used when a trained AI model responds to a prompt. The company describes its approach through two components, Low Voltage Inference and Cluster Scale Memory.
Prefill and decode
Etched co-founder and COO Robert Wachen explained that inference has two stages: “prefill and decode.” Prefill processes the prompt and context; decode generates the output tokens. The company says its low-voltage prefill chip is designed to increase compute density within the same power envelope.

Cluster Scale Memory
For decode, Etched describes a memory and interconnect design called Cluster Scale Memory, intended to create a shared memory pool across a cluster. Wachen said it “allows many chips to connect together and use a shared memory pool at a very, very fast, low latency.” The architecture and its claimed throughput and latency benefits are company descriptions, not independently established performance results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What evidence supports the company’s growth claims?
Etched said in its August announcement that it had secured more than $1 billion in customer contracts, including with frontier AI companies and cloud providers. This is a company-reported contracts figure, not an independently audited total, and it should not be read as revenue already earned.
TechCrunch also reported that Etched had a 10-megawatt data center in Silicon Valley and a facility in Taiwan near TSMC. Those reported facilities provide context about the company’s operations, but their existence alone does not establish production volume, delivery scale, or sustained system performance.
Does the valuation mean Etched’s chips outperform rivals?
No. A high reported funding valuation does not prove that a chip is faster or more cost-effective than competing accelerators. The available reporting and company statements do not establish a comparable independent benchmark showing Etched’s performance superiority.
A meaningful comparison with general-purpose GPUs or other inference accelerators would need to account for the workload and model, prefill and decode performance, throughput, latency, tokens per dollar, power use, memory capacity and bandwidth, software compatibility, delivery availability, and independently verifiable results in production. The figures reported in this funding story do not provide that apples-to-apples comparison.
