For a one-off Estonian company check, search the official e-Business Register by company name, registry code, or VAT number (commonly called KMKR). For repeated, automated lookups, the Register’s documented requisites query accepts a name or registry code; it is an official XML/SOAP-style service, not a documented modern REST API. Bulk downloads are a separate option for machine-readable datasets.

Which lookup method fits your task?

Method Best for Lookup or data scope Access and freshness
e-Business Register portal A person checking one company or exploring search filters Single query accepts company name, registry code, or VAT number; detailed search adds filters such as legal form, status, related person, address, and activity area. Official single-query search and detailed search Viewing legal-entity data has been free since 1 October 2022, although some public-file documents for non-profit organizations and data inherited from the European Business Register may still incur charges. Register portal
API/XML service Applications that need automated individual queries Requisites query accepts a company name and/or registry code. Other queries return basic status information or selectable detailed data groups. Requires an agreement and authenticated register credentials. The XML service is described as real-time; current limits are stated on the official API introduction.
Open-data downloads Bulk analysis or an initial dataset load Machine-readable files covering public information for legal entities currently registered with entered, liquidation, or bankruptcy status. Most files update daily. Personal identification number information was removed from files from 1 November 2024. Download guidance

Choose by volume and purpose: the portal is simplest for an occasional human lookup; the API suits repeated, targeted retrieval; downloads suit broader analysis that does not require a live query for each company.

Find a company in the portal

  1. Open the e-Business Register single-query page.
  2. Enter the company name, registry code, or VAT number. KMKR is the familiar Estonian abbreviation; the English portal uses “VAT number.”
  3. Open the matching result and check its identity details and status. If a name is ambiguous, use the detailed search filters for legal form, status, related person, address, or activity area.

The detailed search also provides a code-or-VAT-number field. A name search is useful when you do not yet know the identifier, but confirm the registry code in the result before treating two similarly named entities as the same company. See the detailed search page.

Use the API for automated company lookups

The official documentation describes XML services and WSDL endpoints. It does not establish a modern REST interface, language-specific client library, or third-party wrapper, so do not assume a REST URL or copy an undocumented integration pattern. The API introduction links to production and test service addresses and explains the access process.

Get basic requisites by name or registry code

For invoice-oriented identity checks or other basic company requisites, the documented query is arireg.ettevotjaRekvisiidid_v1. It accepts nimi (business name) and/or ariregistri_kood (registry code), with JSON or XML output documented. The described response fields include company name, registry code, VAT number, status, and address. See the company requisite information reference.

Choose a status overview or detailed data query when you need more

  • arireg.lihtandmed_v2 is the simple status query. It accepts a name or registry code and can return up to 100 name-search results. Its documented output includes legal form, former names, registry code, status, registry area, equity, address, and initial registration date. Simple data query reference
  • The detailed company-data query supports name or code searches and lets the caller select groups including general data, personnel data, commercial pledges, applications in proceeding, rulings, and registry cards. Its documented maximum company-result count defaults to 10, and language selection is available for Estonian or English classifiers. Detailed data query reference

The detailed query’s selectable groups matter: do not assume every person-related field is returned in every query or universally available. Select only the groups needed for the task and consult the reference for the exact parameters and response structure.

Request API access and plan around the stated limits

  1. Read the official API introduction and identify the service and data scope your application requires.
  2. Apply for an agreement with the Registers and Information Systems Centre. The official introduction says API/XML access requires an agreement and an authenticated register username and password.
  3. Allow for the service page’s stated review period: applications are reviewed within five working days. The documentation says API-only use is free.
  4. Design the integration around the published service limits: one simultaneous query and up to 50,000 query answers per contract partner per day. Document-download requests have a separate limit of 20 per minute per IP.

These operational terms are stated on the official service page as accessed on 7 October 2026; the page does not attach publication dates to the limits. Confirm the current terms and endpoints before deploying, because service rules can change. The answer ceiling is per contract partner per day, not a per-second request rate; the separate document-download limit is explicitly per IP.

When bulk downloads are a better fit

For broad analysis or an initial local dataset, use the Register’s open-data downloads rather than issuing a large sequence of individual lookups. The guidance describes the files as machine-readable and says most update daily. Their scope is public information for legal entities currently registered with entered, liquidation, or bankruptcy status, so they are not a complete historical record of every entity or a substitute for a live lookup when current details matter.

The open-data guidance says personal identification number information was removed from files from 1 November 2024. That statement concerns the downloadable files; it should not be generalized into a claim about every API response or portal view. For person-related details, check the specific query documentation and its selectable data groups.

What to verify before relying on a result

  • Identity: use the registry code to distinguish companies with similar or changed names.
  • Identifier type: the portal accepts VAT number as a search key; the documented requisites API query lists name and registry code, not VAT number, as inputs.
  • Status and scope: select the appropriate status or detailed query, and confirm that its returned fields answer your use case.
  • Freshness: the XML service is described as real-time, while most downloadable files update daily.
  • Fees: free viewing of legal-entity data does not mean every document or every register service is free.
  • Current terms: check the official API page for current agreement requirements, endpoints, and throughput limits before implementation.
