To back up photos on a Samsung Galaxy phone, keep a second copy somewhere other than the phone itself. For most owners that means one of two routes: a local copy written to a USB flash drive, SSD or SD card with Smart Switch, or to a computer over a USB cable, or a cloud copy through Samsung Cloud, OneDrive or Google Drive. The two routes do different jobs, so the sections below separate them.

Menu names, available services and storage support vary by phone model, software version, country and carrier. The Samsung support pages cited here are the US, UK, Australia and Singapore versions. Follow the page for your own region, and check the menus on your phone before you rely on any step, because labels can differ from what is described.

One copy on the phone is not a backup

A photo that exists only in the phone’s storage is lost if the phone is lost, stolen, damaged or reset without a restore. A backup is a second copy kept separately. Before choosing a method, decide what you need from the copy:

  • Access from other devices. You want to see your photos on a computer or another phone, with an internet connection.
  • An offline copy you control. You want a physical drive or computer that does not depend on an account or a Wi-Fi connection.
  • Ongoing synchronization. New photos should appear in another place automatically.
  • A recoverable device backup. You want a snapshot you can restore to a phone later.

Some services do one of these jobs well and others do not. Keeping one of each type is a sensible approach for a library you cannot afford to lose.

Google Photos Photo storage that Samsung’s Google Drive guide treats separately from Drive device backup Google Account; Samsung documents no separate Google Photos procedure

Samsung’s UK methods overview, updated June 23, 2025, lists Smart Switch, Samsung Cloud, OneDrive and Google One as routes. It presents OneDrive as synchronization rather than a backup-and-restore method, so the routes should not be treated as interchangeable.

Make a local copy with Smart Switch

Samsung’s US support page on external storage says the feature lets you create a backup of pictures, videos or documents that can be transferred to a new phone or tablet. Samsung’s Australian instructions, last updated August 11, 2025, list images and videos among the content Smart Switch saves to SD or USB storage.

Check the phone and the drive first

  • Confirm the drive type. Samsung’s US guide names USB flash drives and SSDs as external storage for Smart Switch.
  • Confirm the connector. The US guide says the drive connects through the phone’s charging port, and an OTG (On-The-Go) adapter may be required.
  • Confirm the slot, if you plan to use an SD card. Samsung Australia says some devices have no SD card slot and may need an OTG, USB-C or SD-card adapter.
  • Confirm free space. The drive must hold your photos and videos with room to spare, and the backup will stop if it runs out.
  • Check the options on your own phone. Smart Switch may not save every category of data, so do not assume a single run captures everything on the phone.

Back up photos and videos to external storage

  1. Connect the USB flash drive or SSD to the phone, using an OTG adapter if the phone requires one.
  2. Open the Smart Switch app on the phone.
  3. Tap the external storage or SD card icon in Smart Switch.
  4. Select Back up.
  5. Choose Images and Videos, or the photo and video categories shown on your phone. Add other data if you want it.
  6. Start the backup and wait for the screen to show Done.
  7. Before unplugging, check that the drive has the expected files. Opening the drive on a computer is the simplest way to see the folder structure.

Restoring uses the same route in reverse: open Smart Switch on the new or reset phone, choose the external storage option as the source, and select the content to bring back.

Use cloud backup and synchronization

Cloud options keep photos accessible from other devices and do not need a drive in a drawer. They also depend on an account, Wi-Fi and a storage limit, so check each service’s conditions.

Samsung Cloud

Samsung Cloud can back up and restore supported Galaxy data and can synchronize selected Samsung account data. Samsung’s Singapore guide for Samsung Cloud, checked in 2026, states the auto-backup condition in these words: “For auto backup to work, your device must be charging with the screen off and connected to Wi-Fi.” The same guide says individual files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud, and that supported countries, carriers, models and item categories vary. Open the Samsung Cloud app on your phone to see which categories your device can back up.

Google Drive and Google Photos

Samsung’s Singapore Google Drive guide, updated September 8, 2026, says Google Drive device backup can include apps, photos and videos, SMS and MMS, call history, device settings and Google Account data. Storage comes from your Google Account. Automatic backup runs over Wi-Fi when the phone is charging and has been unused for at least two hours.

The same guide says Drive backup data is deleted after 57 consecutive days without device use. Items backed up to Google Photos are excluded from that deletion. Google Photos is therefore a separate place to keep photos, not a setting inside the Drive device backup. Because cloud policies change, check the current rules in your Google Account and on your phone.

What to check before you buy storage

  • Connector. A USB-C flash drive is the simplest fit for many newer phones. Confirm whether your phone needs an OTG adapter.
  • Slot support. A microSD card works only if your phone has a card slot, or if you use an adapter that Samsung’s pages support for your model.
  • Capacity. Compare the drive’s free space with the size of your photo and video library before starting. An external SSD suits larger libraries.
  • Phone menus. Confirm the external storage option appears in Smart Switch on your phone before you buy anything specific.

Check that the backup is working

  • Open the destination after each backup. On the drive or in the cloud, confirm the most recent photos and videos are present.
  • Recheck automatic backup after a software update or a phone change. Settings can reset.
  • If you use Google Drive device backup and the phone sits unused for long periods, check the backup status regularly rather than assuming it has run.
  • Test a restore of a few photos to a spare device or a reset test. Samsung’s pages describe what is backed up and how, but they do not promise that every restore will succeed for your library. A test restore is the only way you can confirm it works for your own photos.
