ESPN and ESPN2 are rolling out 4K HDR in the United States, with ESPN apps on Apple TV (tvOS) and iOS named as the first platforms. The announced programming includes ESPN-produced Monday Night Football, NBA and NHL coverage, selected college football and US Open tennis, plus Super Bowl LXI. ESPN has not yet identified the exact Apple TV or mobile models that will receive the streams.
What ESPN plans to show in 4K HDR
The rollout covers both ESPN and ESPN2, but the programming scope varies by sport. ESPN says all of its productions of Monday Night Football, NBA and NHL games are included. For college football and US Open tennis, the coverage is selected rather than comprehensive. The announced slate also includes Super Bowl LXI.
ESPN describes the expected benefit as “clearer edges, sharper colors and smoother movement.” That is the company’s characterization, not a result from an independent picture-quality test. ESPN has not published a measured comparison, stream bitrate or quantified image-quality improvement.

ESPN named its apps on iOS and tvOS as the initial platforms. It says additional connected-TV platforms will follow during fall 2026, and that Disney+ in the United States will carry the experience for ESPN Unlimited subscribers. ESPN also says it can distribute its networks in 4K HDR through traditional and digital pay-TV providers.

ESPN’s general device-support page lists Apple TV (4th generation and later), among many other devices, but that list covers the ESPN app generally—not confirmed eligibility for this new 4K HDR stream. The announcement does not identify specific Apple TV generations, iPhone or iPad models, or supported HDR formats. It also does not give a dated, device-by-device expansion schedule. [ESPN’s general device requirements]
As supported devices are added, ESPN says living-room devices will show 4K HDR badges and mobile devices will show HDR badges. Check the event listing on the device you plan to use rather than assuming that general app support means the event is available in 4K HDR there.

How to check whether you can watch a particular event
- Confirm the platform. Start with the ESPN app on an iOS device or Apple TV running tvOS, the platforms named first. Other connected-TV platforms are planned, but ESPN has not published a firm schedule for each one.
- Check the event listing. Look for the 4K HDR badge on a living-room device or the HDR badge on mobile. The badge is the clearest announced indication that the event is offered in the enhanced format on that platform.
- Check your access. ESPN says full access to ESPN streaming content requires a current eligible package with an affiliate partner. ESPN Unlimited support material describes access to ESPN networks and ESPN+ content, while noting that activation through a TV provider may leave out content that provider does not carry. These checks address separate issues: whether ESPN has enabled 4K HDR on your platform, whether the event itself is offered in that format, and whether your subscription or provider package includes the event.

What is still unknown about compatibility and cost
The announcement does not state whether 4K HDR requires an extra fee, a separate subscription tier or a special provider package. It also does not specify minimum internet speeds, video bitrates, display requirements or particular HDR standards. A 4K television or Apple TV listed as generally compatible with the ESPN app is not, by itself, confirmation of 4K HDR eligibility.

ESPN says its new distribution system is IP-based and endpoint-agnostic, built with Evertz Mediator, Overture and Magnum systems and VUE products. The company says the upgrade required coordinated changes across the signal chain, from content capture in Bristol through delivery to viewers. That architecture explains the scope of the rollout, but does not establish which specific devices can decode or display the new streams.

If you already watch ESPN on Apple TV or an iOS device, you can check for the relevant event badge as the rollout appears. For any other streaming box or smart TV, treat 4K HDR availability as unconfirmed until ESPN adds that platform and the event listing shows the badge. ESPN says expansion will continue through fall 2026 toward the postseason and Super Bowl LXI, but has not published exact dates for individual devices.

ESPN previously said its planned ESPN Unlimited service would offer 47,000 live events each year in an August 6, 2025 launch announcement. That was a dated company claim about the then-planned service, not an independently verified current total, and it does not describe how many events will be available in 4K HDR.
