An esoteric programming language, often called an esolang, is designed mainly to explore an unusual idea, make a joke, create an artistic effect, or pose a programming challenge—not to serve as a conventional tool for everyday software development. “Esoteric” describes the language’s design and purpose; it does not mean the language is secret or encrypted.

What makes a programming language esoteric?

There is no single technical feature that every esolang must have. The label covers languages that depart from mainstream design for a particular reason: they may be deliberately minimal, awkward, experimental, humorous, artistic, or difficult to use. The defining trait is the unusual design goal, rather than a specific syntax or capability.

That distinction matters because an esolang is not necessarily a language with a tiny instruction set, and it does not have to be a joke. Some emphasize constraints on how code is written or executed; others use a literary or artistic presentation. The category is broad rather than a formal checklist.

How well-known esolangs take different approaches

These examples show how varied the category can be. They illustrate different design choices rather than defining an exhaustive taxonomy.

Language Design approach Historical context
INTERCAL Parody and deliberate unfamiliarity with conventional programming languages Created by Donald R. Woods and James M. Lyon in 1972
Brainfuck An extremely small instruction set Appears among the 1993 developments in the Esolang timeline
Befunge Code arranged in multiple dimensions Appears among the 1993 developments in the Esolang timeline
Malbolge Extreme difficulty as a central design aim Created by Ben Olmstead in 1998
Shakespeare A literary, poetic presentation of programming Included as an example in Sebastian Morr’s academic introduction

The dates for INTERCAL, Brainfuck, and Befunge come from the Esolang timeline. The Malbolge date and creator are given by the project site. The range of design approaches is also surveyed in Sebastian Morr’s introduction to esoteric programming languages.

Why people create esolangs

Designers use esolangs to test ideas about programming-language design, express an artistic concept, parody familiar programming conventions, or create a puzzle or challenge. Their unusual constraints can make the language itself the subject of exploration, rather than simply a means to build practical software.

People may still write programs in an esolang, and enthusiasts can find ways to use a language beyond its original purpose. That does not change the distinction between what a language was designed to explore and whether it is a typical choice for production software.

Is an esolang secret or inaccessible?

No. “Esoteric” here means unusual or specialized in design, not confidential. Some esolangs are challenging to learn or use, but difficulty is only one possible design choice. For example, Malbolge is explicitly associated with making programming extremely difficult, while Brainfuck is notable for minimalism and Befunge for its multidimensional code layout.

Where to learn more

The Esolang community’s overview provides a general description, while its timeline offers historical context. For a comparative introduction to Brainfuck, INTERCAL, Befunge, Malbolge, and Shakespeare, see Sebastian Morr’s academic paper. The Malbolge project site provides a specification, reference interpreter, tutorials, examples, and tools for that language.
