Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt argued that Google’s emphasis on work-life balance and working from home helped it lose ground in AI—then said he had misspoken and regretted the remark. The comments were made during a Stanford talk in August 2024; contemporaneous reporting described Google’s policy as requiring three days in the office, and the available evidence does not show that remote work caused the company’s relative AI position.
What Eric Schmidt said about Google and remote work
During a Stanford University talk, professor Erik Brynjolfsson asked Schmidt why Google had lost the AI lead to startups such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Fortune reported on August 14, 2024, that Schmidt answered by criticizing Google’s approach to work arrangements: “Google decided that work-life balance and going home early and working from home was more important than winning.” He added, “And the reason startups work is because the people work like hell.” (Fortune, August 14, 2024; Stanford talk recording)
His answer framed work intensity and office attendance as explanations for Google’s AI standing. It was Schmidt’s interpretation, not a demonstrated finding that remote work caused Google to fall behind competitors.

After the comments drew attention, Schmidt said, “I misspoke about Google and their work hours,” and, “I regret my error.” Fortune reported on August 15, 2024, that the Stanford video had been made private and that Schmidt had asked for it to be taken down. The remarks and retraction are reported by contemporaneous outlets; the full recording is no longer publicly accessible for independent review. (Fortune, August 15, 2024)

What the reported office policies add to the story
Schmidt’s comment that Google employees came into the office only one day a week did not match the policy context Fortune reported at the time. Fortune described Google as having a three-day in-office policy and reported that Anthropic employees could work from home for 75% of the workweek. Those are contemporaneous descriptions from 2024, not a verification of either company’s current policy. (Fortune, August 14, 2024)
The contrast also complicates a simple office-versus-startup explanation: the reporting described substantial work-from-home flexibility at Anthropic, one of the startups Schmidt invoked. It does not, by itself, establish how either company’s work arrangements affected its AI results.

Workers’ union challenged the explanation
The Alphabet Workers Union disputed the idea that flexible arrangements slow work. In a statement reported by Quartz, it said, “Flexible work arrangements don’t slow down our work.” The union instead pointed to understaffing, shifting priorities, layoffs, stagnant wages, and management follow-through as factors that slow Google workers. This is the union’s account of workplace conditions, rather than an independent measurement of their effect on AI performance. (Quartz)

The available reporting documents what Schmidt said and his subsequent retraction. It does not establish a causal link between remote work and Google’s competitive position in AI, nor does it provide a productivity or innovation statistic showing that remote work caused the outcome. The figures reported about the incident concern attention to the videos, not workplace performance: Fortune reported more than 40,000 views for the Stanford lecture recording by Wednesday afternoon before it was taken down, while TechCrunch reported 1.4 million views for a separate clip posted on X. The two counts refer to different postings and should not be combined. (Fortune, August 15, 2024; TechCrunch)
