If by “destroy” you mean erase your personal data while keeping the phone physically intact, use the phone’s built-in erase or factory-reset process. Back up anything you want to keep first. A reset removes data from the device; it does not destroy the phone’s hardware.
Before you erase a phone
- Back up or transfer anything you need. Check that photos, messages, files, and other important data are available where you expect them. Erasing the phone does not delete content already stored in iCloud, but manually deleting synced items can remove them from iCloud and connected devices. Apple’s transfer and erase guidance explains the distinction.
- Know the account credentials. Have your device passcode or screen-lock credentials and, if requested, your Apple Account or Google Account password ready.
- Plan for your mobile service. On an iPhone with an eSIM, decide whether to keep or delete the eSIM. Deleting it may require your carrier’s help to reactivate service.
- Use the model-specific instructions. Android menu labels and button sequences vary by version and manufacturer. Consult the manufacturer’s guidance if the general steps do not match your phone.
How to erase an iPhone
- Back up or transfer the information you want to keep.
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Erase All Content and Settings. The exact label may vary slightly by iOS version.
- Follow the prompts. You may be asked for the device passcode or Apple Account password. If the phone uses an eSIM, choose deliberately whether to keep or delete it.
- Wait for the erase process to finish before handing over the phone.
Apple says erasing turns off Find My and Activation Lock. Use Apple’s transfer and erase instructions or its factory-reset instructions if the prompts differ on your device. Do not choose Reset All Settings instead: that restores settings but does not delete photos, messages, apps, or documents. Apple explains the difference between reset options.
How to factory-reset an Android phone
- Back up data you want to keep and confirm that you know the Google Account and screen-lock credentials used on the phone.
- Use the phone’s Settings app to start its factory reset. The exact menu path depends on the Android version and manufacturer; follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.
- Confirm the reset and allow it to complete. Google says the process can take up to an hour.
A factory reset erases data stored on the phone and uninstalls apps and their data. Data backed up to a Google Account may be restorable afterward. See Google’s Android factory-reset guidance for current preparation advice and version-specific notes.

Android
Google’s Find Hub can erase a phone remotely only when its requirements are met: the phone must be powered on, connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi, signed in to a Google Account, have Find Hub enabled, and be visible on Google Play. If it is offline, remote erase cannot take effect until the service can reach it. Check Google’s Find Hub instructions for the current process.

iPhone
If you no longer have the iPhone, Apple provides remote erase through Find Devices. If the phone is offline, the erase remains pending until it reconnects. For a phone you have already given away or sold, Apple’s Find My guidance says to erase it and then select Remove This Device as appropriate: Apple Find My guidance.
Does erasing remove the account lock?
Erasing data and removing an account lock are separate concerns. On an iPhone, Activation Lock is associated with Find My and can continue to deter reactivation after a remote erase. If you are buying a used iPhone, do not accept it while it remains linked to the previous owner’s account. Apple explains Activation Lock and what buyers should check in its Activation Lock guidance.
For a phone you are preparing to transfer, follow the platform’s sign-out and removal steps in addition to erasing when required. Google recommends resetting Android phones before recycling, donating, or trading them in; consult the device maker and mobile operator for model-specific directions: Google’s recycling and trade-in preparation guidance.
What a factory reset does—and does not do
- It removes data stored on the phone and returns the device to its setup state.
- It does not destroy the hardware or make the phone physically unusable.
- It does not necessarily delete cloud backups or other data already stored in an online account.
- Remote erasure depends on the device, account, service settings, and connectivity.
If your goal is to retire, sell, donate, or recycle a working phone, erase it using the manufacturer-supported procedure and follow the manufacturer’s transfer or disposal directions. If you mean physically disabling a phone without visible damage, the supported erasure steps above do not accomplish that.
