Equinix is expanding its Miami footprint through the MI1 redevelopment, targeted for a Q3 2026 opening. The project is planned to add 475 sellable cabinets with $59 million in total capital expenditure. Its importance extends beyond extra floor space: Miami combines carrier-dense interconnection, subsea cable access and cloud on-ramps that connect U.S. infrastructure with Latin American markets.

What Equinix is expanding in Miami

The central project is a redevelopment of Equinix MI1. Equinix’s 2026 project table, based on 2025 year-end data, lists a Q3 2026 target opening, 475 additional sellable cabinets and $59 million of total capex. The date is a target rather than confirmation that the capacity is already available; customers should verify construction status, powered space and delivery dates directly with Equinix.

MI1’s physical scale and resilience

Current MI1 specifications describe a 255,513-square-foot facility. The design provides N+1 redundancy for power and cooling, a 5 kVA minimum cabinet density and at least 30 hours of generator autonomy at full load.

  • N+1 power and cooling: one redundant component can be unavailable while the design continues to support the stated load.
  • 5 kVA minimum density: a baseline for cabinet planning; high-density deployments should confirm the available per-cabinet and per-row limits.
  • 30-plus hours of generator autonomy: the published figure assumes full-load operation, so actual runtime can vary with the deployed load and operating conditions.

Equinix’s current Miami page displays a global guaranteed uptime figure of 99.9999% or higher. That is a global Equinix guarantee shown on the metro page, not a claim that every MI1 configuration has an identical, facility-specific service-level commitment. The contract and the selected service should control any uptime calculation.

Why Miami is a gateway to Latin America

Equinix lists four Miami facilities—MI1, MI2, MI3 and MI6—and positions the metro as a communications gateway to Latin America. The value comes from combining several layers of connectivity in one market:

  • Carriers and partners: dense interconnection lets enterprises reach multiple network operators without building separate long-haul connections to each provider.
  • Subsea systems: cable landings provide international paths that can bypass congested or indirect terrestrial routes.
  • Cloud on-ramps: private connections to public-cloud regions reduce dependence on the public internet and make traffic engineering more predictable.
  • Cross-connects and Equinix Fabric: customers can connect colocation environments to carriers, cloud providers and business partners through Equinix’s interconnection services.

Equinix describes its Miami facilities as being “in the heart of Miami” and serving as “the communications gateway to the commercial centers of Latin America.” In practice, the gateway is an ecosystem rather than a single cable or building: the useful outcome depends on which carriers, clouds and subsea systems are available to the specific cabinet and cross-connect design.

MI3’s role in the existing network

Miami’s expansion builds on MI3’s earlier international role. Equinix’s 2012 opening release described MI3 as a 31,300-square-foot site located 44 miles from Miami, with direct links to Latin American network operators and a low-latency Brazil route through GlobeNet.

That history matters because a new MI1 capacity block can be deployed alongside an established interconnection site rather than starting a market from scratch. Customers should still confirm the exact physical handoff, meet-me-room availability and route diversity for each service: a metro-level statement does not guarantee that every provider terminates in every building.

How subsea cables extend the Miami advantage

Equinix announced the Monet submarine cable with an initial design capacity of at least 60 Tb/s. The system’s Florida landing equipment was located at MI3 in Miami, with additional landings at Fortaleza and Praia Grande near São Paulo.

For a company moving traffic between the United States and Brazil, a subsea path can provide a more direct international route than chaining several inland networks. The benefit is not simply headline capacity. Enterprises should evaluate:

  • which cable systems are available at the chosen facility;
  • whether the carrier offers physically diverse entrances and repair options;
  • the contracted latency, packet-loss and availability objectives;
  • how traffic fails over if a landing station or cable segment is impaired.

The “at least 60 Tb/s” figure is Monet’s initial design capacity, not a guaranteed bandwidth allocation for an individual customer.

Private cloud access from Miami and São Paulo

Equinix announced AWS Direct Connect in both the Miami and São Paulo metros. Direct Connect provides private access to AWS for customers operating in Latin America, allowing a deployment to keep cloud traffic off the ordinary public-internet path between the data center and AWS.

A common architecture places customer systems in Miami, uses a private interconnection to AWS, and keeps application or data services in the São Paulo region when Brazilian residency or proximity requirements apply. The design still requires an application-level latency test: the presence of Direct Connect does not promise a particular round-trip time, and the AWS region, carrier path, routing policy and traffic direction all affect results.

Is Miami a good location for low-latency Brazil traffic?

Miami is often a strong candidate for U.S.-to-Brazil traffic when the application benefits from a short path to Florida cable landings, multiple carriers and private cloud connectivity. It is not automatically the fastest or cheapest option for every workload. Brazil-bound performance depends on the selected cable, provider routing, congestion, last-mile access and the location of the end users or cloud region.

How enterprises can plan an MI1 deployment

  1. Define the traffic map. List users, applications, cloud regions, Latin American partners and required data locations before choosing a cabinet count.
  2. Request a building-level availability check. Confirm whether each intended carrier, subsea provider and cloud on-ramp is physically present in MI1 or requires an inter-building connection.
  3. Model power and density. Treat 5 kVA as the published minimum, then size actual racks, A/B feeds, cooling and growth reserves for the equipment you will install.
  4. Test the Brazil path. Measure latency and loss at representative times through the proposed carrier and cable combination; do not rely on a metro label alone.
  5. Design failure modes. Document diverse entrances, alternate carriers, cloud failover and a second geographic site if downtime or cable outages are unacceptable.
  6. Verify commercial terms. Obtain recurring and one-time charges, installation lead times, cross-connect pricing, power commitments and the exact service-level language.

What the expansion means for the Miami market

MI1 adds planned capacity to a metro whose strategic value already rests on interconnection. More cabinets can let enterprises place compute, network equipment and security appliances closer to the carriers, cable systems and cloud connections they use. The practical benefit is greatest for organizations that need several of those services at once—not simply a room for servers.

The expansion also gives customers another planning point for growth. A Q3 2026 target provides a timeline for capacity discussions, but availability, commissioning and service turn-up must be confirmed as the project moves from construction to operations.

Bottom line

Equinix’s Miami strategy is larger than the MI1 building. The planned 475-cabinet redevelopment strengthens a metro that links U.S. infrastructure to Latin America through carriers, subsea cables and private cloud access. Miami is a credible starting point for Brazil-bound and regional workloads, provided the final design proves its latency, route diversity, regulatory fit and total cost for the specific application.
