Enviro Power’s core idea is to combine a building boiler with on-site electricity generation: a combined heat and power system can supply useful heat and electricity from one fuel source. Since its 2017 startup profile, the company has reported a Hartford field activation, ETL certification and the start of serial production. Those milestones do not establish current sales availability or independently verified performance.
What microcogeneration does
Microcogeneration is a small-scale form of combined heat and power (CHP), which produces electricity and useful heat at the same time. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes CHP as an integrated system combining a prime mover, generator, heat recovery and electrical interconnection. Its potential benefit depends on making practical use of both outputs, not simply on how much electricity a unit can produce. EPA’s CHP overview notes that suitability depends on a facility’s operating hours, thermal requirements and local electricity and gas rates.
CHP is not a single machine design. EPA lists reciprocating engines, turbines and fuel cells among the technologies used. A boiler-integrated generator is one approach within that broader category; the right option depends on a facility’s heat and electrical loads, fuel conditions and installation requirements. EPA’s CHP technology guide outlines the different system types.

Enviro Power’s boiler-and-generator concept
Enviro Power presents SmartWatt as a boiler replacement that provides heating and hot water while a steam-driven generator produces electricity. The company’s current technology page identifies the SW300-6 and says serial production began. Its homepage claims up to 6 kW of electricity and nearly 98 percent heating efficiency on a higher heating value (HHV) basis. These are vendor-stated figures; the reviewed company pages do not supply independent test documentation establishing the conditions behind them. See the SmartWatt technology page and company homepage.

The present-day model should not be conflated with the product described in the 2017 profile. IEEE Spectrum wrote about a 10-kW micro-CHP concept and a staged plan to target light-commercial sites first, then a proposed 5-kW residential unit and eventually a 1.5-kW model. Those were plans reported in May 2017, not a verified current roadmap. The article also reported Enviro Power’s claim of up to 30 percent lower electricity consumption, without providing test conditions; it should not be treated as independently measured savings. IEEE Spectrum’s May 2017 profile describes the early concept and plans.
Milestones since the 2017 profile
2017: prototype and early market plan
IEEE Spectrum identified Michael Cocuzza as Enviro Power’s founder and described a prototype based on his home hot-water boiler. The company was seeking financing to bring its micro-CHP product to market. The article framed light-commercial buildings as the first target, with residential products contemplated later.

2019: reported Hartford field activation
On January 7, 2019, Enviro Power announced that it had activated a commercial SmartWatt Boiler in a Fuller Brush building at an office complex in Hartford, Connecticut. The company said the unit replaced existing equipment and was producing heat and electricity for 30,000 square feet of office space. That is a company-reported trial milestone and site scale, not a third-party evaluation or measured energy-savings result. Enviro Power’s January 2019 announcement provides its account.
2022: certification and serial-production announcements
A December 2022 release from Enviro Power and Windings announced ETL certification under UL standards and said Burnham Holdings had launched serial production. Enviro Power CEO Dan Nadav said the company had “achieved ETL certification and have kicked off serial production of the SmartWatt Boiler.” Separately, a June 2022 release from Senator Chris Murphy quoted Nadav saying the company was ready to start selling its solution. These are dated announcements; neither confirms that orders are currently accepted. The ETL and production announcement and the Senate release document those claims.

What the milestones establish—and what they do not
The record supports a timeline of a company-described prototype and market plan in 2017, a reported commercial-site activation in 2019, and certification and serial-production announcements in 2022. It does not establish current retail or project availability, price, lead time, installation geography, warranty terms, the number or type of operating installations, or independently measured field performance. The company’s current pages name Burnham Holdings as a manufacturing and distribution partner and Windings as a design partner; confirm those roles directly before relying on them for a present-day project.
Enviro Power’s Vision & Impact page also presents figures for potential building reach, emissions reduction and energy savings. The reviewed content does not provide enough methodology or a year to treat those figures as established outcomes, so they are not a substitute for site-specific evidence.

- 1. The higher the water pressure, the greater the power generation.
- 2. Uses: Tap water generator, field flow generation.
- 3. Micro hydro-generator, easy to carry, can charge mobile phones, batteries, and other electronic products, and supply power according to the water pressure.
- 4. The interface is 4 points, and it can also be turned to 6 points or 1 inch pipe. The larger the flow, the larger the hydraulic output.
- 5. High-efficiency permanent magnet brushless generator, impeller design, compact structure.
How a facility should assess a boiler-integrated CHP system
For a facility manager, the central question is whether the building can use the system’s heat and electricity when they are produced. A boiler-based CHP unit may fit a site with sustained thermal demand and substantial run hours; a mismatch between generation and useful heat demand can undermine the economics. Compare candidates on a common basis rather than nameplate electrical output alone.

- Electrical output after parasitic loads, expected annual operating hours and the facility’s electric-load profile.
- Net efficiency, fuel consumption and emissions, with the test method and operating conditions stated.
- Capital and installation costs, maintenance schedule, service availability and warranty coverage.
- Electrical interconnection requirements and whether islanding or backup operation is supported.
- Local electricity and fuel rates, plus any site constraints affecting installation or permitting.
The reviewed information is not sufficient to conclude that SmartWatt is cheaper, cleaner, more efficient or lower-maintenance than other CHP systems. A meaningful comparison requires comparable performance data and a site-specific assessment.
